This video has multiple objectives. A lot of guys would like to know what is involved in truing a Remington 700 action just to know. Others have the equipment, and would like to try it. This will also give those having the work done on their actions a good idea of what it is they are paying for. It was made with the intention to help those that don't already know what it takes.

Below I have a link to all 12 parts. The rifle is being built for a member here on the Hide. It should be complete and tested by 3/19, and I will make the closing video with a range report then. The whole process took a lot of video time, so I had to break it up because you tube will only take up to 10 minutes per video. If you want to see it all you can simply visit my cannel on you tube which is suar08161991.

While there are other ways to do this work, this one provides the guy with a lathe the ability to do it. I hope this helps answer some of the questions about truing a factory action. Thank you for watching.

Below I have added a video of the finished rifle. I have also included two test targets using FGMM 168 at 100 yards from the bench off a bipod. One group has 6 shots with one outside the group. The other has 4 shots with one outside of the group. Both groups were under the 1/2 MOA guarantee, at around .390 for the 5 shot.

Very nice.. thanks for posting. Subscribed. Really gives an appreciation to all work gunsmiths put into building a rifle. What's great is you can see all the time, patients and exactness that goes into a quality build. Now I know why the cost and waits.

Re: Video truing a Remington 700

No Robert, thank you for your Idea. It works great!!! I went through the same thing when I was learning years ago. So I thought it would be nice to give a little back. I know I fouled a few words in the vid, but it is strange talking to a camara in a shop all by your self. Part 8 is not coming up for some cyberspace reason. I will try to re-upload it this coming weekend. I do apologize for the problems.

Here is the full youtube direct link for part 1.

Oh.

And this NEEDS to be duplicated in the gunsmithing forum and then stickied there. Thank you for taking the time to do this and being WILLING to share this knowledge with the community knowing that it might be a services sale here or sale there on the outliers of your business you could be giving up to do it.

Re: Video truing a Remington 700

I watched them all, good videos, sadly missing #8 but hey, can't be perfect. There's a couple other series on 700 action truing on youtube as well, did anyone else end up watching someone else's video in the middle because youtube sent you to a different channel?

Re: Video truing a Remington 700

Oddball-Six, thanks for moving it to the correct section. I really had no idea of how to do it. I see that it disappeared from the bolt rifle section. From a business perspective, some would think that it's not a good idea. The way I see it is the guy who has the equipment is going to try it regardless, so why not show the correct way, or atleast what I think it is. Most precision rifle shooters don't have the equipment nor intrest in building, but would really like to see what is done on their rig to make it shoot well.

Yes I am a business who is always looking for new rifle builds, hence another reason for the vids, but the least reason. The vids have been out a little while before I thought of posting them. I did so after talking with a very well respected smith here on the Hide, who thought it would be a helpful idea to others.

For those who are curious about me, I build a limited number of rifles a year. Just under 49 a year to be exact. One at a time, beginning to end. I do it mostly out of love for the work, which I don't see as work, but my treat in life. Most don't know me because I'm not in any magazine article, but I can assure you I do nothing less than the better known guys. There are many great smith here that have earned their reputation through hard work and dedication, and i would like to be one of them. Three come to mind that I would like to thank personally , William Roscoe, Mark Gordon, and Randy from R&D Precision. Great work guys, and again thanks to all.

Re: Video truing a Remington 700

A big thank you goes out to you for doing all those video's. I know it was time consuming for doing the video themselves and while doing a build. I surely appreciate it and your efforts has answered a lot of questions about the process. My hat is off to you!

Re: Video truing a Remington 700

Watching video two just saved me about $800. I just called Dave Manson and ordered the boltway reamer with two tapered bushings. I had been agonizing over another setup with bushings made in .005 increments but didn't want to pony up the $1100+ for the set.

I have been really happy with my reamer holder from Manson. It beat the other one I bought hands down.

Thanks a lot for the vids.

Re: Video truing a Remington 700

Great videos! Even though I have no plans to ever get into smithing, it's really awesome to see the process and what goes into truing an action.

As a layman, I was able to follow everything you described.

Re: Video truing a Remington 700

Thank you for posting these videos - its really helpful for a Gumby like me that doesn't have much technical knowledge as far as the machining process. Now finally get what it means to "true" an action.
Great stuff

Re: Video truing a Remington 700

I like your taste in lathes,I have a Colchester also. I really like the 13" for work barrel.I see you also opted to use the spider on both end I found this a nice set up and better for shorter barrels in that particular headstock. Very nice videos, very informative. It was very generous for you to take the time to document this info, truly a wealth of info for the enthusiast. Ive been teaching my son some of this stuff since he has shown an interest in precision rifles I wish I had the ability to share info like you do,he might actually learn something

Re: Video truing a Remington 700

STR, your work on these videos is greatly appreciated. I went to gunsmithing school 16 years ago and feel like your videos are just as good if not better then some of the instruction I had received. This certainly qualifies as my continuing education which I have recently restarted. Do you recommend any books on action truing? Again great job and a BIG THANK YOU!

Re: Video truing a Remington 700

JimT, I also used to use the Manson reamer holder when I chambered thru the steady rest, which by the way, if done correctly, yeilds very accurate rifles. On a phone call with Dave from PTG, I let him talk me into buying his reamer holder. I will admit, I was reluctant to try it when I saw it, but I did. As simple as the tool is, it works very well. I still hold it in my hand with reserved feeling every time I get ready to use it, but I believe if it works for you, use it.

As for my lathe, if I could buy the same one brand new today, I would. Mine is in great shape. I'm just affraid of anything breaking, because the parts are very expensive, and take a long time to get. My other lathe is a Southbend heavy 10 which I love, but it is not as ridgid as I would like for the action jig I use. For that lathe you would need to use a set up like William Roscoe uses which also works great, and is more compact.

I'm truly very glad that all of you liked the videos, that alone is very gratifying to me. Again thank you all.

Re: Video truing a Remington 700

I saw this post while browsing SH on my phone at work and when I got home I had to search for it once again, and I can tell you it is worth every second! I watched all of the videos in a row and now I have a tremendous amount of respect for what goes into truing an action. Before I watched this I just assumed it meant slapping the action into the lathe and truing the face. I had no idea it included truing the threads, the bolt, the bolt face, the lugs, and all to within one ten thousandth of an inch!!
After seeing all the work that is involved makes me appreciate the cost involved when sending a rifle to "A Great Smith" and knowing they are truly doing every thing possible to make my action/barrel/bolt combo a real shooter.

Bravo on the video series, and once again let me say THANK YOU.

Re: Video truing a Remington 700

Thank you very much for posting these videos!

A few weeks ago I got the Steve Acker video you refered to. I would say your video is much easier to watch! Steves video may be getting a little out of date (at least the one I got through brownells!).

Great videos really appreciate the sharing of knowledge and experience!

The videos are awesome! I've always been interested on how the whole truing/blueprinting worked but all I could find were articles. Thanks for posting.

Re: Video truing a Remington 700

Great video series, I cleared out a whole afternoon last weekend and watched them all and picked up some great thing!!

You may want to give some of the guys like Manson and PT&G a little heads up that you mentioned their product, the lady that answered the phone at Manson was a little short with me and accused me of calling several other times with the same questions, I should have mentioned the videos to her but did not, she wanted me of the phone, this was the first time I've ever called Manson.

Re: Video truing a Remington 700

I'm truly sorry to hear about your experience with Manson. I didn't really think about them getting multiple phone calls with the same questions. I would have taken the time to mention the vids to them. I have met Dave Manson and Dave Kiff at recent Shot Shows, and can tell you that they are very good guys that care about their customers. Please don't let one bad experience with someone who for what ever reason might have been having a bad day keep you from having or doing what you want or need. Thank you for your compliments.

Re: Video truing a Remington 700

I've got tougher hide than that, I'll call them back after things cool down a bit. I'd be pissed too if I thought some dill hole kept calling back and asking the same question!

Great video again by the way, I'll be going over it often!!
