I really liked this movie! It's original and fresh, something completely new! I've watched it five times in less than a week and that's very rare (it is part of a one week trial so...). Skeptical of video game movies and I'm not a big fan of CGI, but in this case it was to replicate a video game world and not to mimic real life so it worked out really well, and it's not your typical video game movie either. There are real life scenes too. Don't wanna spoil it, but it's about the future where everything is fucked and people only want to escape a miserable reality and a large game world was developed for this with total VR immersion. It's like you're there. But like with everything, some giant corporation stepped in and was fucking it all up for everyone.

I like video games, but I wouldn't call myself a gamer. It takes me forever to finish one. I have a PS4 but use it mostly for streaming or DVD's, but I do have a few really long RPG type games that I like. I have a buddy, my army buddy, that's' a gamer and he's told me a lot about it over the years so I understand most of the lingo but if you don't play games or never have, you may not get it or like the movie that much. He also helped me understand just how important it is to them, that there's a real economy revolving around it, and that it's rapidly changing. A setup like in the movie may be not too far off in the future.

If your a 90’s-2000’s video gamer you owe yourself to watch this movie.

The amount of character they were able to put in the movie and the amount of Easter eggs is insane.

This was a great movie and made for a great time. Every time you watch it you spot new stuff and new characters.

A++

Really enjoyed it. All the pop culture references from 80's forward was great. Really well done, was surprised at how good it was. Really neat concept, kind of want to read the book now.

I had a guy that used to work for me that's really into the VR world. I was asking him about it about the time this movie came out, he said the best way to explain the VR worlds and how it works is to watch this movie. He said it's exactly like that.
He's kind of a weird little dude.

Another recommendation for the book. Has a lot of details and character development that the movie didn’t have time to develop. Phil G

Well... the movie was interesting. I think it was well done, but it was also a perversion of the book.

Anyone from 40-6o years old would totally understand almkst all of the references in the book. Whereas in the movie, they seriously channged a number if things there was no need too.

I got the distinct impression that they changed the book plots in order to push societal agendas that hollywood currently favors. (Diato is killed, all the primaries meet at the end of the book, no meantion that you can buy a gun from avending machine with an instant background check, Z actually goes to school in the Oasis and finds the first key next to his school, Z goes to IOI to get info by himself - not to rescue, etc. )

Having read the book, i liked it better due to the polt development.

Definitely read the book. I wish I would have seen the movie first because the book is just that much better. The quests actually feel like quests instead of the characters just getting lucky and solving a riddle. The movie is great, but just watered down.

I think I would have enjoyed the movie much more if I didn't realize how much material was chopped out or altered. I knew that Spielberg would do an interpretation of the story that I would "enjoy." The book portrays such a larger/longer journey and stays true to that period of time (instead of adding modern pop culture references so the younger generation can feel relevant).

Stale plot, young kid and his plucky troop of misfits against the evil overlord and his storm troopers. The special effects were so-so. The acting average.

Has there EVER been a movie that was better than its source material novel?

Jurassic Park was the very first example I can think of - the movie misses SO MUCH from the novel it is borderline criminal...but as a standalone flick, it was landmark film.

Personally I loved Ready Player One...and if you enjoyed that, and have younger kids, you'll probably also love Ralph Breaks The Internet.
