I've got a Leup MK6 3-18x44 34mm tube scope sitting waiting to be put on a rifle. I'm just wondering if its enuf scope for for my 224 Valkyrie (on order, about 3 months out) Or should I get another scope?

I've heard you really don't need massive magnification to shoot long range. This gun will be mostly for steel at distance, mostly to 600y, occasionally out to 1000. Scope did well out to 600 for the 338 Norma it was on, but wondering if 1000 y is too much for it.

Normally, for .22 cal, high magnification aren't a bad choice because it allows you to see bullet holes on paper better. In your case, you mentioned steel so I wouldn't think it's too bad of an option. Never looked through an MK6 but the magnification range isn't bad at all!
Good luck...

I Googled it already. And found several reviews of the actual scope. I am looking for more... from THIS forum.... particularly related to this caliber rifle, which Google had nothing on.
What does the specific caliber have to do with the scope?

And google also contains links from the hide and is actually a better search tool for the hide than the hides own search.

And this scope was released before the hide migrated back to this form and off of scout so most anything to do with the mark6 super in depth would have been in that middle part from 2-5 years ago so there isnt all much. And there certainly isnt much in team with the 224valkyrie for whatever reasons you could have.

In general youll find people like the short m5C2 turrets over the tell m5B2 turrets.

You will be fine. I have the same scope and banging steel at over 1400 was no issue. 600 yard will be a piece of cake and depending on environmentals you might not even venture close to 18 because of mirage.

It is funny as I find myself trying to use too much magnification when I am at my home range just banging targets but when I am on the clock at a competition I am rarely above 15x just to make sure I can spot my next target quickly. Its fairly obvious this would be the case but I think what I am getting at is that when we are just by ourselves and have all the time to stare at a target we start to wish we can zoom in just a little more, but then when push comes to shove we really don't need that extra mag.

thanx. That's "on point" Guess I'll just hafta try it. Just pulled it out again. It is super clear glass.

I guess I getsucked into the "more is better" mindset....when it comes to magnification.

Mostly....waiting forthe rifle is killin' me. :)

Yup. GOtta change my thinking. Shooting groups is different that shooting steel.

More is better only when the recoil isnt enough to knock the target out of your view such as with benchrest or you dont need to spot your own impacts such as just messing around with buddies for shits and giggles.
For steel shooting the middle ground is where everybody plays. I like to shoot on 29 power but it sure is hard to see a plate at 500 or even more importantly a miss vs backing it down to 15-20x. I wouldn't feel at all handicapped with 18x on the valkyrie you are building. Especially since you already have it sitting on the shelf.

I’m banging torso sized steel out to 800m on my farm with a x4-16 with no issues or complaints. Personally I’d want a x20 top end for beyond 1000m and just to shoot groups at 100m because my eyes suck but really this video shows mag range and targets out to distance well and should give you an idea of what you should need. You’re the only one that can make that call all our eyes, skill level and needs are different. But I’d say a x18 top end would be fine.

I would say if you liked the scope why not use it you already own it , it cost you nothing to reuse it . if you find it's not enough mag for you then think about another I personally like to see my shots ( tiny holes ) I do not own a spotting scope yet if i find my self with a longer range than 1k well have to invest in one cause except march , not sure there is a larger mag scope out there made yet , using a delta stryker 5x50 x56 34mm now which has been ineradicable so far . and more than worth the $1,558 it cost . which ever direction you decide to go I wish you good luck and many years of shooting .

Yeah....seems like a plan. I'm just tryign to get ducks in a row for when the barrelled action shows up.

Can ya see any holes at 600 yd at 50x?

With no mirage yeah but not every hole. At 29x with my Cronus btr and low mirage I can see 6mm holes on white computer paper but not on slightly less white butcher paper. So I say it depends on what your expectations are and the conditions. I shoot paper at max power but that inconsequential for seeing shots as the paper saves them. For steel where the background is just dirt you can zoom out to see the splash.

it also could be not fully summer and mirage was and is not that bad even today I could see it but could still see the holes and yes at full mag and they were 224 rounds and at 500 yards . It was on a 3 inch bright orange circle sticker . we are on the east coast and not in a hot arid area or muggy yet . I am sure when summer gets cooking the mag will not be at full , but for now i can still use it . as far as zooming out to see splash did not need to after we got on sighted it on a big board next to the target did not need to see splash on ground I could see the misses and the hits on the board covered by white corrugated 18x24 ' plastic sheets .
