  • Monthly Sporting Rifle match RATON NM

I thought I posted this here last year, but I couldn't find the thread to update it. The first match of 2006 is coming up in two weeks, Feb 5th.

    The
    Sporting Rifle Match
    "First Sunday JAN-SEPT"
    NRA Whittington Center, Raton, NM

    Quote:

    PURPOSE
The "Sporting Rifle Match" at the NRA Whittington Center in Raton NM is designed to test a rifleman's skills shooting small targets from approximately 175 to 700 yards in the natural terrain, with what he can carry throughout the course. (The "Sporting Rifle Match" has nothing to do with NRA High Power "Sporting Rifle" class.)

The match format is 10 stages spread over a 2 mile distance. Each stage has 6 targets at varying distances to be engaged with only one shot each. Target distances are known to the shooter. There is no time limit, but the shooter must finish within a reasonable period of time. No "sighter shots" allowed. Score is total number of hits out of 60 possible. No one has shot a perfect score, yet.

Match entry is $25. There is partial cash payback to winner(s) based on the match turnout. The balance of fees goes to the NRA WC.

Typical equipment used includes: a rifle capable of 1 MOA accuracy; rifle optics allowing precise hold-over for small targets from 175 - 700 yards; binoculars to spot for other shooters; and a backpack to carry water, ammunition, and a couple power bars.

    SCHEDULE
Each match takes place on Sunday.
SATURDAY 1100-1200: Range Officers and anyone else willing to help, show up to set, repair, and paint targets.
SATURDAY 1400-1500: Sight-in stage open for use after target work is completed.
SATURDAY 1700: Sight-in stage closes for the day, range is locked.

SUNDAY 0700: Sight-in stage opens for approx 30 minutes
SUNDAY 0730: Shooters' meeting, and match begins.
SUNDAY 1300-1400: Match finishes, payout to winners, and targets are put down.

Match cancellations will be announced on this web page ASAP before the match, ideally by Friday morning, but it could be as late as Saturday afternoon for a last-minute emergency. So... CHECK THIS WEB PAGE FOR POSSIBLE CANCELLATION ANNOUNCEMENT BEFORE LEAVING.

Just to be clear, you are talking about the turkeys here, right?

Congrats to Rick on the win, Tom (not the turkey) as best old fart, Chris with the 308 and Seth as FNG - from the memory of an old fart, so I hope I got it right.

      Thanks! It was fun.

For the Colorado folks, I have a couple new in wrap 30-round PMags, gen 2 (not M2 or MOE). I would like to get $12-each, or trade for?

            • Great match guys! Talk about interesting wind... Whew!

Also, isn't it great that this match has been around for 10 years?? I think this match has just the right level of difficulty - not too hard for beginners, just difficult enought that no one has ever shot a perfect score. It is certainly my favourite match.

A big thanks to Mike and the guys who run the match!

.....thinking of driving down Sunday morning at 0'Dark Thirty and wanna time it correctly.

                  Thanks in advance!

                  • Starbuck: I can't make the Magnum match, but I just happened to be on the phone with the match director a few minutes ago and asked him your question. He said the match starts at 8:00 and that sight-in will get going about 7:15.

                      • I'm excited to finally say I should be attending this match very soon. My rifle is getting a bed job done right now, then a vacation for me. After that I should be gearing up for my first trip to Raton!

                        • Once my rifle shows up this is a must.

                          • Whoo Boy this match was a hot one... and a long one, too - massive turnout
I think this was the most physically challenging Raton match i have ever shot.

The wind was up to it's usual tricks again too...

Again a big thanks to Mike Kolar and the crew for making it happen!

                                  Hi Hoser -

Reading your comment above... what was it about the .300 win mag that bothered you? I would have thought that caliber would be great for bucking the wind. Recoil too much over an extended period of shooting? Somthing else?

I dont spend much time behind heavy kickers, mostly just little 6mm calibers as I am a delicate flower.

Managing recoil was a huge deal for me. Seeing hits/misses was not happening with those 230s.

And yes, after 70-ish rounds I was done.

Yep, same thing with my 30-375R. Does crazy good in the wind with those 230 hybrids but harder to see misses on the closer targets.

How many revs did those 250Y steels swing Hozer?
