  • Who here has pointed bullets?

Im considering buying a whidden pointing die and am wondering how effective it has been for others? Can people that have these post their experiences?

I'm looking to point 139 scenars which have a larger meplat than most but am interested in results from other bullets as well.

I have and don't do it any more. Too tedious for my needs when my ammo is already good and I'd rather just go shoot. Or you can just buy another brand that is either prepointed or has a polymer tip. There is some application for F class, but for shooting steel I think it's wasted time overall.

I have not yet pointed bullets but plan to give it a try. The experienced folks here pointed me at the Hoover tipping die. All tuns inpended.

Yeah, I do it with Berger 155 hybrids. In my experience it's worth about 1 MOA at 1000 yards with those bullets moving 3050 fps. It takes about 40 minutes to point a box of 500. Have also pointed a lot of 6mm 105 hybrids and had good results with those also. I put away all of that 6mm BS though and now just shoot .308. Like a man.

I'm set up to point 22 and 6mm with the Hoover die and meplat trim on the Giraud. I trimmed and pointed a bunch of 82 grain Bergers for my 22 Creedmoor. I tested a couple groups of pointed vs. unmodified at 600 yards (max range I had) and the unmodified bullets had less vertical which surprised me. Since then, I've not pointed any more.

Did they use any less elevation? How about 100 yard accuracy and POI?

I have a very accurate load with the 139 Scenar but they aren't doing quite as well as other bullets at longer distances.

Nope, they shot the same elevation. I might need to go out much further to see a big change, though. That 82 grain bullet is doing 3550 fps. 100 yards accuracy and POI was unaffected.

When I want to shoot like a man, I take the brake off the 50 BMG and rapid fire a hundred rounds.

Then I walk crooked for the next 3 weeks.

It may seem counter-intuitive, but in my experience the ďpointierĒ bullets pointed better. I could be wrong but I doubt youíll see a big improvement in the 139ís.

I also sold my pointing die after a couple of years pointing Hybrids, I got tired of the extra step.

Yes, I use the Whidden system. It takes some time but longer range I have seen better ballistics because it increases your BC up to 7% on some . I saw about a 3.8 % increase
