Wanted to get this back up on the new site:

There is lots of scattered handloading info for the 300NM but I haven't found a dedicated thread so I started one. Loads are organized by bullet weight. Anyone have a different load they really like? Here's what I've found so far:

I am not in a position to contribute at this time, but I am a consumer of the info contained. With any luck I'll get my 300 Norma built, and be able to contribute in the coming months. The info RE: barrel length and twist is especially helpful. Bring on the additional data. Anyone running a relatively short barrel?

Well I've scoured the section for 300RUM loads with 208s and had no luck. I wonder how close the NM loads would work?

Out shooting this AM. Great load that shot in the .3's, but it's pretty hot:

    Norma brass

    215gr Berger hybrid

    90gr N570

    FGMM 215 primer

3185fps average over 5 shots w/ slight ejector marks from a 28" Bartlein med palma.

I've been looking for a cartridge to use in a long-range target (maybe hunting?) rig I aim to have built, and the 300NM has to be it; good compromise of power, and efficiency.

My hope is to run Nosler's new 210grain LR Accubond projectiles, slick little buggers, with an incredible G7 BC (.366) as an alternative to the Bergers.

Any suggestions for an action? I'm considering Defiance Machine, or the Mauserfield?

The load data you've listed corresponds damn closely with my calculations. Great resource blokes!!!

Without running the thread off topic too much, I'd say go with Defiance Deviant action. Word to the wise: Nosler is a little overly enthusiastic about the Accubond LR bullet BC's. Do a Google search regarding the accuracy of their advertised BC's. Litz published some info on it.

Yesterday, I finished up developing the lo0ad for my BAT Machine actioned long range hunter 300 NM. Wicked accurate and easy to find a load.... Berger 230, Retumbo 86 gr., FGM magnum, 2973 fps out of a 24" suppressed Broughton.... hole in hole accurate at 100M. tomorrow I will stretch it out to a thousand. I am confident it will do well.

    230 Berger OTM .719

    85.4 of H1000

    Norma Brass

    Fed nonmatch primers

    22" barrel

    last 100 yd string was 2867, 2867, 2867, 2853, 2862 and they were all in 1 hole

This rifle has been amazing. Consistent 1000yd groups between 5 and 6 inches. I finally found a spot to shoot the mile (1762) and when we finally went the wind was wildly inconsistent but I had 1 of 13 on target. There was zero splash visible so I'm certain it'll be better next time. I'll take one at a mile considering this rifle represents my first try at long range, first try at reloading, first try at cutting a chamber and building a rifle, first try at a bolt gun actually.

I have had a problem with the brass. About one of every 3 cases won't rechamber in the rifle. They will but I have to really fight to get the bolt closed. Any tips or logic that someone could provide would be extremely helpful.

It seems like brass life is a common complaint of the 300NM. Speed costs. I'm pushing mine pretty hard and it looks like 3 reloads is all she's gonna give me. If Lapua came with brass (or if someone else like RWS made some tough brass) we'd all be in heaven.

nnnn16, have you tried bumping the shoulder back just a tad? I run mine thru a redding body die and havent had any problems with it. Dont force it, you'll end up galling your lugs. You want them to chamber like butter.

Wondering if anyone else had an opinion on the brass life for the Norma Mag thus far?

I am working thru my first 100 pieces of brass, have only shot a little under 60 rounds right now. Haven't driven the brass hard yet, at 87 gr RL33 and waiting for my chrono to come back from repair to see what my guns shooting at.

I haven't been able to source Fed 215s around here in So Cal lately so I've been using WLRM. Most curious about the primer pockets. Making me nervous to hear that primer pockets were loosening after 2-3 firings.

I have read that the 300NM is hard on brass. What exactly is failing? Are the necks splitting or the primer pockets getting too loose to hold primers?

    Thanks,

Thanks. I just got 100 pieces of brass from Midway. Those were the tightest primer pockets I have ever encountered. 215Ms required a lot of pressure to seat. We'll see how long they last.

Run cci 250 or even better Tula large Magnum.

I dont have any premature loose primer pocket with those.

Thanks! I'll give those a try. I've got a metric ton of both. I'm wondering if Norma has changed the brass to address the loose primer pockets that seem to plague this round?

Not to derail but two suggestions...
    1. When posting handload data, please list all aspects:
      bullet, primer, powder, brass
      jump to lands, COAL
      ES, SD, avg FPS
    2. i am testing a primer pocket tightening tool along with another SH member. will post results in the reloading section soon...I think the NM crowd can benefit from it, provided you guys aren't also seeing signs of case head separation or cracking necks

Meet the newest addition to the family, Louise. Picked her up from GAP today. These are shots 4, 5, & 6 at 102y. I shot a nice 1" 3-shot group at 356y for the final group of the evening. Load: 230gr Berger hybrid, 88gr H50BMG, 2.847" to ogive. I've done zero load work so needless to say, I'm really looking forward to getting her dialed in! Rifle specs:

Bartlein 1-9 twist finished at 27"
    Badger FTE brake

That is really pretty! Glad to see you're back in the NM game. I'd love to hear what kind of velocity you are getting with the 50 BMG. I am using Retumbo right now and would like to see if I could get a little more speed.

Thanks CJ97. I haven't chrono'd that load yet - didn't have time. I'm expecting it to be in the 2875-2900 range. There were no pressure signs so I'm moving up to 89gr and 90gr. I'll post velocities to this thread when I have a chance to get out and shoot again.

I bet 2750. It is too slow for this case. RL 33 is the powder for the 300 Norma

Got a chance to get out shooting this afternoon and chrono the following load:
        Berger 230gr hybrid
        88gr H50BMG
        2.847" @ ogive
2896 fps average over 5 shots
        SD: 5.0

Got the first 35 rds through my 300 NM this weekend, thinking it's going to be a real peach.

27" hawk hill 9 twist in a DTA.
        230 berger hybrid target
        3.660 coal (jumping roughly .020")
        Virgin brass
        Retumbo
        F215 primer

Did a quick ladder from 83-87 grains in 1 grain increments to start. Primers were flattening at 86, cratering and leaving light ejector marks at 87. Shot a 3 shot group of all charges 85 and 86 were best. 87 was indicating speeds around 2990 on prochrono (which has been spotty lately).

Went back today with 85.3, 85.9, 86.5. Only clocked 2 of the 85.3 rounds @ 2956, 2952 on the magnetospeed.

Tightest 3 shot group charge was 86.5 @ .266", others werent terrible either. I'm guessing this is around 2980 fps.

Re: 300 Norma Mag Load Data
        05/02/2016

I spent the weekend with two new 300 Norma Mags. Both rifles were built by Omar Alonzo of Alonzo Custom Rifles in Houston. One rifle is a complete build with a 28" 1:9 Broughton on a BAT Tactical Action. Barreled action is sitting in a Manners T-4A with Jewel Trigger set at about a pound. This is my Dad's rifle and is the third that he has had Omar build in the last year. Each one has been a laser beam.

The second rifle is my AX338 that I had Omar re-barrel with a 26" Broughton. I have done some preliminary load development with this rifle and had 50 rounds loaded with 84 grains of Retumbo under pointed 230 Hybrids. With only 25 rounds on the barrel, the Magnetospeed clocked this load at 2890 FPS. This is near max in my rifle, as 86 grains resulted in cratered primers, heavy ejector swipe and heavy bolt lift.

My dad brought his rifle and 100 rounds that the smith loaded for him. The load is 89 grains of RL 33 and the 230 Berger. Both of us used virgin Norma brass and 215M primers.

Saturday morning I mounted one of my scopes on the BAT and took both rifles out to zero and run them over the Magnetospeed. The 28" Broughton barrel printed an average of 2921 with an SD of 25. Not great, but the barrel had less than 10 rounds on it and had just been cleaned. I already had velocity data on my AX with the Retumbo load, so I shot a few of the RL 33 rounds and got 2901 with an SD of 15. I brought a piece of AR500 with me so I went ahead and set it up and backed up to the 1000 yard line. The first 3 shots with the BAT were just below the center of the 15" circle in a 3.5 inch group. Not Bad! From there I went to 1500 yards. It took 3 shots to get on target, but by then I was out of time, so I recorded the dope and headed back to the house.

Late Sunday afternoon my dad and I headed out to the range. We started at the 1000 yard line with my dad shooting off the bench and me laying in the dirt. Hits at 1000 were no problem on the 15" circle. With both rifles we were having to come down on the elevation numbers we were getting from my iPhone Shooter app. It was only a couple of clicks at 1000, but it was half a mil at 1500 and .7 at 1787 yards. The BAT really shined at a mile. Two shots to get on target and then 3 hits in a row before the wind blew me off the left side of the 24"X24" plate. My dad hit it couple of times as well. I tried with the AX, but it was almost dark by then and we couldn't see any splash at all.

It was a really fun afternoon, all in all. We were super lucky with the weather... cloudy with a 3 o'clock breeze that never got over 9 MPH. There was never any mirage to speak of, so you could easily spot hits on steel out to a mile. As of now, I am shooting my AX wit the Crux 7.5 ARK338 suppressor. It does a nice job on the sound, but boy do you pay for it in the recoil department. It's not terrible, but after shooting the BAT with a badger brake, it seems pretty bad. I will keep shooting it this way for a while , but I may end up ditching the can and getting a good brake. I'm definitely going to pick up some RL 33 to try out. At the end of the day, when I trued up the velocity in shooter, it looks like the 28" barrel had gained almost 100 FPS (3016) since the first rounds shot over the Magnetospeed. That tells me I can reasonably expect 2950 out of the 26" barrel. We'll see if that works out. Both barrels have almost 100 rounds on them now, so I will do another OCW test and re-check velocity. After that, I plan on just shooting the snot out of them. This is a really fun cartridge!

Here are the load Specs for each rifle:

        26" 1:9 Broughton

        230 Berger Hybrid-pointed

        84 gr. Retumbo

Virgin Norma case- Chamfer and debur W/Giraud trimmer

        215M

        3.710 COAL

        2900 FPS

        28" 1:9 Broughton

        230 Berger Hybrid

        89 gr. RL-33

        Virgin Norma Case

        215M

        3.605 COAL

        3016 FPS

        Thanks,

        CJ97

Struggling with load ADD as usual for my 27" 9 twist DTA. Top end loads that are shooting well right now, all at 3.650 COAL with 230 target hybrids (.015 jump) and fed 215s:
        92.0 gr rl33 : 3030 fps avg - most consistent velocities
        95.5 h50bmg: 2930 fps avg
        85.0 retumbo: 2980 fps avg

Shot the 92.0 rl33 in 90 degree heat yesterday, extraction was a little sticky and primers were cratering worse than usual. Also shot 3 that spent the night in the freezer and were kept on ice until 30 secs before pulling the trigger - avg 3010 fps.

I'll prob end up sticking with h50bmg or retumbo for steel shooting.

I think there may be a node with a lower charge of the RL33 that will still give you higher velocities than your 50BMG load. Have you run an OCW or ladder with lower charge weights?

Not very formally. I shot 3 shot groups in one grain increments from 88.0 to 92.0. It drops off to mid 2900s pretty quick.

          Here's my load:
          LRI built,
          24" bartlein heavy palma 8twist
          84.0gr H1000, light ejector swipe
          Cci 250s, virgin norma brass
          230 berger hybrids @ 2850fps SD ~ 15.0
          Seated .010 off the lands.

The groups seem to hover around 1/2". Every round through this rifle has been through a tbac ultra 9. After the first or second shot the mirage gets heavy at times and I think it's my position that affects groups mostly. First 3rds of 84gr went into a 3/10" group. Usually about 3" groups at 500-550yds.

Ironically about 20rds later the same load printed a 3.15" group at 1012yds.

That said I just bought 16lbs of retumbo. Wanting a bit more speed. And this load isn't bad either.

That said, what kind of groups should I be expecting? I have an elite iron mirage cover in the mailbox. I'm really hoping for 2925 and sub half minute groups with retumbo. But we'll see in a few weeks...

Rekindling this area. Seeing a lot of info on the 230's. Any more powders with the 215's? Are you guys finding N570 and H1000 to be very dirty? Looking to try RL33, Retumbo, IMR 7977, and maybe some 50BMG.

Pick the rifle up next week. 26", 1-10"

Retumbo, H1000 and RL33 should all be good choices for the 215's. I've gotten the lowest SD's with H50BMG/230 combo but you may give up 50-75 fps compared to other powders. N570 gave me great results wit hthe 215's - 3150fps from a 28" barrel, 3/4" groups at 356y - but it's pretty dirty.

I've been using both h1000 and retumbo with the 215s
Mine is a 22" barrel , very forgiving on loads, .5 grain differences still poi. I use 87.6 retumbo 2.8 lto Tula mag primer. SDs around 4or 5 , also shoot 86.4 h1000 both loads are run in the 2990s. .25 moa for both .Loving the 300 Norma.
As a side note my fired brass is tight right at the mouth when trying to push a bullet through, once past the mouth it slips through. I think it may be causing a bit of overpressure. Any ideas?

          230gr Berger match hybrid

          88.0gr RE-33

          2.837" at ogive

          SD: 7.9

          2950fps

          1.25" 4-shot group at 403y.

I am amazed at the differences in the RE-33 powder and the load data on here. I asked Berger for their reload table for the 230 Hybrids, since it is not in my reloading manual, and was a little surprised at the information. They show slower velocities at similar charges than the majority on here using the re-33 and 230's. (Included the table for anyone interested - NOTE: This is Bergers information sent to me by Bob Blaine)

Got bored and tried to match the table they sent to me with the ones in the manual.

I did a ladder test on Monday with 7 loads, starting at 87 grains and going up to 90. I had hoped to see the 2900 mark relatively quick and was concerned about what might happen past 90 grains. That didn't happen. I get it that one rifle is not like the next; however, there are quite a few that have found 2900+ at 88 or 89 grains. I wouldn't think there was a chance there could be up to 300 fps difference.

          Specs:
          26" 1:9 Bartlein Barrel
          Berger 230 Hybrids
          Norma Brass
          215M primer
          RE-33 powder
Used a Lab Radar for velocity

I am not the best shot by any means. I had 1.5" groups at 200 yards. Lots with potential (4 shots inside an inch then ruining the group with horizontal spread due to my inability to shoot) but I am not a seasoned shooter so I have my errors.

I think series 7 would have had better results but I forgot to arm the Labradar. It was the best group of the day.

Has anyone tried the Hornady ELD bullets with any luck yet? I was looking at the ELD 208 and 225 gr bullets. My Barrett MRAD should be here in a month or so and collecting supplies to start loading.

Berger's Data makes no sense. 94 grains of RL33 under a 230 in my rifle would lock the bolt and probably pierce a primer. 84 grains of Retumbo is also near max for me. The speed numbers they have are also super low. I get 2950 with 89 grains of RL33 and the 230 and 2900 with 84 grains of Retumbo.

I agree with you. That was the first thing I said after getting the tables. I had a conversation with them regarding their velocities and starting load data as compared to this post and other info I've seen. I wasn't happy with the answer I got so I started at 87 grains. As you can see, at 90 I'm at 2,870. They show 90gr at 2,755 or so. I had no pressure signs so I'm going to go up by 1/2 grain (starting at 90.5) for 7 more loads and see how it goes. I'll report back.

My God that's fast... and a shit ton of RL33. That has to be a compressed load, no?

No, not compressed. I'm guessing it's about 92% fill. During my work up loads I ran a few 96 and 97 gr loads pushing close to 3380fps. The bolt got mildly sticky and I started seeing full moons on the brass. my rifle seems to like the 93-94 gr loads. I'm seeing less then a qtr moon with 94gr. It is a ton of powder, 1 lb loads 75 rounds so it goes fast.

Anybody having any pressure issues with RL33? I'm just trying to narrow down what might be happening with my gun. 89 grains of RL33 under a 230 Hybrid is giving heavy ejector swipes, a lot of primer flow and a really heavy bolt. Not sure what is going on.

No issue yet. I plan on shooting a ladder test with 7 loads from 90-93 grains. 90 grains gave me no pressure and ~2800fps. I want more velocity.

Today's test turned up light pressure at 92.5 and 93 the bolt lift is heavy. 93 produced 3050fps but that load is to hot for my rifle. 91 and 92 grains both grouped well and 92 is @ ~2960.

Hmmm. How long is your barrel? I am getting 2970 with 89 grains in a 26" Broughton. This is with a 230?

Yep, with a Berger 230 and 92 grains of Reloader 33 from a 26" Bartlein 9 twist barrel. Norma brass and Ferderal 215's (not 215M's). OAL is 3.672 with .020 jump.

Great thread. Thanks. All of this load data is going to be very helpful.

I am looking at the Christensen Arms BA Tactical 300 NM. Any thoughts?

Anyone had a chance to try out the new Hornady 225gr ELD-M?

                Hornady has published BC's of .777 G1 and .391 G7. Higher than the Berger Hybrid. It's a 1.655 OAL.

Their BC's have been pretty accurate on these new bullets so far in the other sizes I have tried.

Anybody have a clue what is up with Berger's load data for the 230s? They list a max load of 89.1 grains of Retumbo, but it sounds like no one is getting close to that without major pressure signs. It seems like most people are running 84-87 grains of Retumbo. What gives?

That Berger Data is messed up. I would totally disregard.

Thanks for confirming my suspicion. It is pretty surprising to see Berger miss the mark like that. Their data has been spot on for me in the past.

Anyone finding this brass sucks??? Virgin brass runs fine but after resizing and measuring I'm finding it is growing on me like crazy and primer pockets are getting very soft after 2-3 firings. I'm using Whidden dies and headspace gauge. I want to contact NORMA USA but I am unable to find a phone number.

                            Retumbo speed test with 215's. 3.600 O.A.L

86.4-3053 > I'm going to explore this node. I think there might be one up higher but the way this brass is holding up, I don't know if its worth it.

I'm getting a hard "click/stick" on the bolt with all these charges. I've read others are having the same issue and I'm wondering if there was a really soft batch of brass that went out. I'm getting case growths of almost .010" per firing!!!

Anyone else have any data for the 198 grain Flat Lines?

I'm in the process of getting a 300 NM barrel for my DTA and trying to get load recipes to work from. Looking like maybe Retumbo, VVN570, and RL-33 are the primary choices.

So far only 1 guy said he was running the Flat Lines and that was with RL-33.

My barrel will be 28" Bartlein with 1-8 twist.

                                Thanks

This is part of the reason I went with a 40 degree improved version. Case stretch is virtually non-existent. Primer pockets are the weak link for me. But I tell myself that complaining about brass life for 300 Norma is like complaining about the gas mileage of your Ferrari. Performance comes at a cost. With 230 Bergers at close to 3100, brass life becomes more palatable. That's not to say I am not pulling for Lapua to start making brass. Come on Lapua!

I bought some once fired 300 Norma brass .My Redding body die wont size 7 rounds ,You cant close the bolt handle with out allot of force. The body die is all the way down. The length of the brass is 2.490 ,same as the other brass that is chambering without issue.I am using Redding die set s bushing die.7 ROUNDS OUT OF 280. Would a full length sizer make a difference?
