I'm guessing most of you fine folks know something about the garbage going on in Virginia following the recent election where the democrats took over complete control of the state. I intend to do my part to resist all of the anti-gun, anti-life, and anti-etc. crap they are pushing. If things go south, what do you folks know about Tyler? I have a daughter living in Austin but do not want to live there--just close enough...

Any information about quality of life, shooting ranges/clubs, hospitals/doctors, cost of living would be appreciated.

Ive been there a few times to eat BBQ at Stanley's and a few times for work.

Seems like a nice enough East Texas town. Has all the amenities that are needed. Has a REALLY nice rose garden on like 50+ acres if you are into that stuff(or just to go there and relax).

You are under 2 hours to Dallas. Lots of acreage out there if you are partial to wanting something like that. Price are also going to be much lower than in the DFW metroplex.

Canton is a pretty cool nearby town also, much smaller than Tyler though.

No knock against Tyler, as rjacobs says it's a nice East Texas town that's not too far from DFW. But have you considered the Bryan-College Station area? It's got a booming economy right now, is more centrally located relative to the major urban centers in Texas, and is closer to your daughter in Austin.

Don't give up on Virginia just yet, either. The 2nd Am. sanctuary movement seems to be gaining a lot of momentum in the more rural areas of Virginia. Texas is also likely to trend blue in the coming years, so you might end up in a similar scenario as the one you left.

I frigging hope not! The "man-bun" population is getting awful heavy though unfortunately...

Only ever driven through Tyler. Wish I had more info for you. If you have a little money, give Marble Falls a look!

what made you ask about Tyler?

It’s not a bad area. Not to far from good bass fishing at Lake Fork. Decent hunting in the area. Shreveport LA is about 1.5 hours away for any casino needs you may have.

Tyler is pretty slick. All things you need, and damn ear in the country.

It's got some of THE best hog and duck hunting Texas has to offer. Has all the other creature comforts you'll need if you're living in a city now. It would be a place to consider should I ever leave DFW.

Second on the Marble Falls area, I owned a small spread in LLano about 1/2 hour west. Sits right on the Colorado River and good boating, swimming, fishing etc, just down stream from Lake Buchanan. Has enough overflow from Austin to have a couple good restaurants. Try Russo's on the hill over looking the river and town. If you get out a bit you can find a nice small ranch for reasonable. People like guns but dont expect the conversations with locals to go much beyond PU trucks, cows, and who's doing who's wife.

Thanks everyone. The wife found it looking around. Seems to be pretty nice and a lot like the type of place we live now. Ten to fifteen years ago the bass fishing thing would have been all I needed to hear. Wish I had the money I spent on go-fast bass boats, equipment and tournaments. Sold my last boat to a fella in Austin years back. He got a great boat. The hog hunting thing I might like. Not a problem where I live now but some counties not too far from here have issues.

I have been reading up on Texas and I agree you guys are in the democrat's crosshairs. With all of the tech companies moving in and/or expanding, they are bringing in boatloads of crapy type voters. That is how they got Virginia. Took over the northern counties near DC. God help this country if Texas falls blue.
