greetings all, just thought id add my results to the mix with a load i am working up for the 155 bthp palma MKs... also a special gday to the other aussies

first of all let me preface this by saying that this is my first shot at reloading my own pills, so if any of you see any flaws in my process, SING OUT!!!!!!!

went to the local 1000 yard range chasing powder and pills that could double as wild pig/goat/etc as well as paper punchers... and got turned onto sierras new 155 palma, which as it turns out is made down here in AUS by dyer projectiles out of darwin i am told.......

so i had already done all the research and settled on ADI 2208, for powder. in the states you would recognise it as Reloader 15 or varget, again, made down here in AUS and sent overseas i am told.

i used once fired winchester brass, and federal gold medal match primers, and starting from the recommeded minimum 44.0 grains worked my way up to the max of 47.0 in .5 increments.

overall length was 2.80' as i gather that is pretty much a good standard length to start with...

testing was done at 100yds, 35 degrees C, no humidity, baaaaad mirage..........

ended up settling on 46.5 gains of 2208, as it shows promise, with the smallest group .51'.

now before you all tell me that is not that great, ill again say, this was my first attempt at reloading my own, and they were fired from a pretty much stock rem 700 sps tac off bipod in the dirt with a rolled up sock rear rest....

i think the load can do better, much better, especially on a day im not wipiing sweat out of my eyes every 3 minutes....

my question is, do i leave the load as it is, and try it some more in diff conditions to see how it holds up, or do i go straight to tuning seating depth, any suggestions?? What would you do in my shoes???

thanks for giving an aussie a chance to speak his rant, cheers all,

jimi

Re: sierra's newish 155 palma,...looking good!!!

I have use in excess of 47 grains of Varget with the 155 Sierra (2156) and Winchester brass. With that seating depth, you are in the ballpark. I think mine were seated out a little further. Since 35C is right warm, I suspect that is where any problems with the load would show up. With that information, I'd look at either seating depth next rather than see if that load holds up in other conditions or powder charge in 0.2 increments around 46.5 (46.3, 46.5, 46.7). How far are you jumping them now? I like to jump those bullets about 0.010" to 0.015". I have had really good results with that bullet. My velocity was about 3090 fps with no pressure issues.

Re: sierra's newish 155 palma,...looking good!!!

Reloader 15 is not Varget ( Aussie AR2208 ) . Reloader 15 is slower than Varget more like H380.
I am not aware that it is made in Australia . Being a double based powder and more temp sensitive than ADI ( Aussie ) powders it's a different type than ADI usually make.
It is an Alliant powder and I think its made by New River Energetics in the USA.

With Alliant, I've seen pics of same powder, labels showing not only different countries of manufacture (THREE!!!), but also different listed component chemicals.

My guess is that they are really, really good at giving makers the full specs for their powders, AND in actually getting the spec'd performance out of them.

Re: sierra's newish 155 palma,...looking good!!!

thanks for the tips guys, ill try it out...

like i said, i was just passing on what i heard, so it just goes to show thay not everything you hear at the range is correct, HAHAHAHAHA

also, one more question, ive got about 60 once fired remington cases i dont want to go to waste, after checking a random cross section from each box, i found them to be on average aprox .5 grains +/- either side of the capacity of the average winchester brass..... has anyone experienced much change when going from winchester to rem???

like i said, i just dont want to waste time and money switching between win and rem, and also have to load 2 diff loads etc etc and all the pain the the butt things that go with that, hahahaha

thanks again guys,

jimi

Re: sierra's newish 155 palma,...looking good!!!

also, any predictions on performance on game with these 155's? im thinking hollow point cant be all bad, and was told by the gent behind the counter that he knows of some roo shooters who use them to fairly devistating effect,

off topic alert!

(despite what anyone else will tell you, roos are a huge problem here in australia and need culling in order to try to manage population numbers!!!) it is unfortuantly our own fault for the population explosion due to farmers putting dams and water points all over for livestock....... buuuuut!!! they dooooo make for a fantastic steak, and some of the highest quality leather available in the world, (just look what kind of leather nike and adidas and lotto put on their top of the line soccer boots)

again, cheers,

jimi

Once you try the ladder et for accuracy definately move the seat on the bullet. I load for a savage 10 with a heavier bullet but found the COAL change will add accuracy. Good luck!
