I would counsel all cogent participants in this thread to abandon it. It was a trap to begin with, all these threads that bring out the cop haters end up the same way.

A wise man told me once, "You can't kill stupid, you can chase it down and beat it with a stick, but you will only end up tired."

For those that got all bent about seatbelt use. Go read the post. I didn't advocate for either way. Use it or don't. I don't give a rat's ass. I agree there is a benefit to them. But do we need the govt to mandate their use? How far do we go in a Nanny State that's there for your protection? If they decide that motorcycles are too dangerous what then? How about riding ATV's? Or like England and knives are too dangerous? Guns in general? But hey if you want big govt to cover your ass because you are too pitiful to make informed decisions. Move the fuck out of this country.

What do Wayne Williams, Bruce Davis, Larry Eyler, James Swann, David Berkowitz, Joel Rifkin, Tim McVeigh, Randy Kraft, William Lester Suff and Ted Bundy have in common?

None were caught by task forces, detectives, giant invasive apparatus, wiretaps, video surveillance, deep state mind-reading... they were caught when they committed minor traffic violations.

Randy Kraft, the California Strangler, BTW loved picking up young Marines, torturing them raping and strangling them. When CHP pulled him over for suspected DUI, the police found the shrouded body of Terry Lee Gambrel, an active-duty Marine from El Toro Marine Air Station, in the passenger seat...

One of America's lesser known scumbag serial killers... convicted of 16 murders, it is believed that he may have killed as many as 61. Stopped for an illegal lane change. Wonder if that saved any Marines?

I know you read what I wrote. I never said the stop shouldn't have happened. I am just against the fishing expedition afterwards.
Officer pulls over the OP and asks for his license, insurance and registration. A simple question like how are you guys doing tonight? Will give him the opportunity to smell alcohol. "Hey I pulled you over because you didn't signal. I am going to check your info and if all is good you will be on your way." Now if everything is good he can either write the ticket or give the guy a verbal warning.

How many times have we seen the quote about giving up liberty for the false sense of security?

For those that keep bringing "What if it was your 17 YO daughter?"
Seems like she was with an older person that made a wise choice by getting a ride with someone she could trust.
I raised 2 girls. I taught them as best I could to not make poor decisions. If they did they could always call me and there would be no additional problem with me. It is better to learn from the mistake by giving them sound advice for the future than to dogpile the consequences.

So a funny (and not so funny) thing happened to me over the weekend. I got pulled over. I drive a standard cab 2 seater. To get into the story, I was at a local sports bar. When I left, I saw a friend (an ADULT)of mine walking down the street with another girl, her 17 yr old cousin whom I didnt know. We chatted for a few and the friend asked me if I could drive them to wal mart. I said, sure. So they piled in. Now, 99 times out of 100 I could have made this trip with no problem. But not this time. While driving down main, I guess I failed to use my blinker to make a lane change. This is around midnight, with absolutely zero traffic. Damn, I really put peoples lives in danger. Trooper spots me and does a U turn and blazes up to me. Pulls me over. Asks me for my info, which I give. He walks back to his car to run my info. I wait for about 5 minutes. He returns and asks me to get out of the vehicle. Having a spotless record, I was surprised by the request, but I complied. He pats me down and asks me to walk back to his cruiser and sit in the back. Umm, what?!? I get in. He shuts the door. He gets in the front and starts interrogating me about how I know these 2 girls. I tell him. I also ask, why am I sitting in the back of this car? He replies..."Oh, we'll get to that." Keep in mind he still hasnt told me why he even pulled me over. He exits the vehicle and returns to my truck to interrogate the 2 girls about how they know me. They tell him, he returns....."Well bud, Im getting conflicting stories here. That one girl is only 17, you know that, right?" I reply..."Oh yeah? Ok. I dont know her." Hes like..."uh huh, yeah." And why the fuck is it ANY of his business how I know people? As if its "illegal" to give a minor a ride? For real? Fuck off. He proceeds to tell me that he got the 17 yr old dads phone number and is going to call him to let him know what is going on and if he knows shes "out" with an older guy. I say..."Go for it." He steps out of the vehicle to call. He calls. Call lasts about 30 seconds. He returns and says im good to go. Yeah, no shit.

He eventually told me why he pulled me over. Failure to signal lane change. I ended up getting a seatbelt violation. But I know its because he saw a guy with 2 cute girls in the truck. Because thats ALL he was concerned about. This guy was clearly trying to make a mountain out of a mole hill and get me into some sort of trouble. I didnt have to exit my truck, but I did. I didnt have to get in the back of the cruiser, but I did. Not wanting tased or shot, I complied. Next time I wont. And LE wonder why they are losing support from the public. I have 2 lifelong friends who are cops and Ive always supported LE. But this leaves a bad impression on me about how cops harass and collect.

Can you imagine what would happen to cops back in 1800 if they stalked the wagon trails and tried to give shake downs and speeding tickets? Im not even mad about the sealtbelt ticket. I deserved it. Was 100% my call and I got nabbed. What pisses me off the most is that I was treated like a career criminal and that I just committed the most unlawful act by having this minor in my truck. Is it illegal to give somebody a ride now? No. But apparently VERY frowned upon! Glad theyre "cleaning up" the streets! Good work! Road pirates.

......Absolutely nothing wrong with his conduct at all.

He's putting you in the back of his vehicle for his safety and yours. He was going to talk to the women/girl in the vehicle and he would prefer if you didn't have the option to take him by surprise. People without a criminal history do illegal things all the time. He's patting you down for weapons.

He pulled you over for a perfectly legal traffic violation stop and made a brief investigation into something that seemed out of the ordinary here.

Sure, you're a law abiding person, but I can promise you countless crimes have been prevented or criminals apprehended by officers doing good a good job like this one.

You should call him and thank him for his service.

Investigation of what? Failure to use turn signal?
Write the ticket and move along.
Oh wait. That's only if the fine officer wasn't on a fishing expedition.
While on the stop for the failure to use a signal, the officer noticed something that wasn't normal for what he is used to seeing at that time of night.

He further investigated that and found there was no wrong doing.

Its good cop work and your opinion is 100% wrong here.

Here's how public opinion goes in a different situation:

Guy is pulled over for a ticket, actually just kidnapped the two women. Cop notices something not exactly right, but doesn't look into it right away.

Guy kills both women, is caught, and records show the stop.

Media and public outrage for cop who didn't investigate further.

Gov't doesn't mandate the use to save you from yourself. Gov't mandates seatbelts to protect you from other people.

Two scenarios:

You have to slam on breaks for whatever reason. No seatbelt, you fly into windshield and lose control of vehicle, killing two joggers.

You have to slam on breaks for whatever reason. Seatbelt is worn, you are able to retain control of the vehicle and safely navigate around the two joggers. You shit your pants, but everyone is alive.

Dthomas, how is me being in the back of a cruiser for my "safety"? What am I going to do, throw myself into traffic or beat my head off the hood? And im sure that during the long history of people driving vehicles, this wasnt the first time a guy gave 2 girls a ride. Just saying. I must be a trail blazer if not!

So the cop doesn't have to hit, shoot, or taser you if you do something stupid. He kept a situation that could escalate from even having the opportunity to escalate.

You have to look at it from his perspective

90% of the people he comes into contact with are good people. The time that he lets his guard down an doesn't treat you (within reason) like the other 10% is the day he doesn't go home.

You're wrong here.......100%.

Plenty of cops (and people in general) do things they shouldn't. This isn't one of those times. He did his job perfectly and you're being a butt hurt douchebag about it.

I say Deputy Dog pulled this guy out on a fishing expedition. He was looking for drugs, money or anything to pad his stop. You say he was doing good cop work because he noticed something. Keep telling yourself that if it makes you feel good. But you have no idea what he "Noticed". 100% wrong......doubtful. Probably a lot closer to correct.

I did.... and if it had been me who pulled you over, the only thing that would have gone differently... is that I wouldn't have written you a citation.

But that was me... you had to work hard to earn a traffic infraction ticket from me. Sounds like you did everything right... and if I were the officer, it would have been 'thank you for your help tonite... have a great evening.'

Unfortunately, some have a more by-the-book viewpoint... or perhaps sergeants who allow less leeway on stops. Our department allowed us a lot of leeway to exercise professional judgement. And no quotas of any kind. Not stops, not tickets... not arrests. Other departments differ.

As for the fishing expedition... we aren't expected to have blinders. (well, weren't.... I'm retired.) We are expected to use our Spidey-sense... and look for non-sequitur's and things out of place. And pursue them. That's the difference between putting a traffic camera at every intersection and relying on human beings who have discretion and instincts and, occasionally, are fallible. If it's all about raising revenue at a stop sign, put in a traffic camera and every vehicle that doesn't stop.... send a ticket by mail. That technology exists. It's easy. Does anyone really want 'that?' Because some areas... are pushing that. That will eliminate the 'human factor' and any fishing. And will ensure a ticket is issued for every rolling stop. Does anyone want that? I don't.

Personally, I could care less about a seatbelt ticket or a rolling stop. Except as a reason to create an interaction. It was the duffel bag full of cocaine and the murder-warrant-guy-trying-to-get-to-Canada guy hidden in the trunk next to the border... that I was interested in during a stop. And, yes, both those things happened in my AO... just not to me. The rest of the time... it was a good chance to interact with people... give them a professional and gentle warning... verbal back when that was allowed... and NOT try and add $90 to the coffers. But if someone wanted to contribute and was dickhead enough to make it clear that they wanted a ticket... well, it was game on, cupcake!

Anyway... Fishing is part of the job. Along with knowing where to fish. And knowing what a fish looks like.... which some call profiling and I call... good job instincts. But to expect that noone is going to fish... is to not understand what one does during a traffic stop or an interaction.

That's not the 'security state' coming down on anyone. That's what the taxpayers want from its centurions. Well, most of them.

Cheers and allow me to say.... sorry you got a ticket. If it was me... you wouldn't have.

We are not that far off in our views. I have stated that officers deal with scum. There is no doubt. The problem is that eventually everyone is scum and not a Citizen. If you deal with 10% scum do the other 90% deserve to be treated like scum? Have a skeptical view on a stop. But treat Joe Citizen as just that until he proves otherwise. It would do a great deal in political relations to give Joe Citizen the benefit of the doubt on a stop. But that goes out the window when he is looked at as a revenue stream.

"That's what the taxpayers want from it's centurions." In a round about way, yes. They want services but don't want their taxes increased to pay for them. City council puts pressure on the Chief who rolls the shit down hill to generate revenue.

BTW. I am not the OP. No tickets for me that are not deserved. I wear a helmet on my bicycle and motorcycle and an avid seatbelt wearer.

Not true about everyone. The need part ? that could be construed as the law getting in the way of the intent of said law, doled out by those who do not wear the badge. I've known two county's in my life where if you were to walk in an the judge heard he (Perp) need his ass beat or worst an over 50% of all in the court room agreed, the judge would find the defendant not guilty right out of the gate. I understand the letter as well as the intent, but there are times when slime-balls need to be dealt with, w/o the sworn being involved then or after it all come to light.

It could just be me , but dude leaving the bar and stopping to pick up two bitches on the way out, ain’t the same as joe citizen going to work in the morning. To make it sound like ol copper just randomly stopped the guy and jacked him up is dumb.

He was doing some hinky shit, lucky he didn’t get caught with his hands in her pants, so what if the LEO could smell a couple citations. It worked out for the op, he seen the backseat of a patrol car for the first time (I assume since he’s being so bitchy about it).. it ain’t that bad , just try not to think about where the smells come from.. you don’t want to know !

Again it’s not that you did anything wrong but to the law, you looked like you could’ve been. If your like me and don’t want to deal with po po at all..

Don’t pick up bitches whilst leaving a bar late at night!

Probably not the best choice of wording. How about detaining and questioning under the guise of " there may have been a crime"? Yeah it's all within what the courts have said were reasonable. But is that congruent with a free society with the right to move about freely? Not so much in my book.
Especially considering the statement by Mr Thomas. We get paid to be nosey and legally creating interaction with people who are almost always good to find a bad one.

This is all fiction. In the OP he states the officer made a U turn after the failure to use a signal.
"I failed to use my blinker to make a lane change. This is around midnight, with absolutely zero traffic. Damn, I really put peoples lives in danger. Trooper spots me and does a U turn and blazes up to me. Pulls me over."
Maybe sooper trooper was psychic? Oh wait I forgot about those Spidey Senses. That's where the sex traffic came from.

Yea his psychic ability lead him to work the streets near the bar. Again they kicked in when he made contact and noticed the youngun in the truck. And yet again his amazing psychic ability lead him to write a simple seat belt ticket having determined the op was in fact not a fuck up.

If the op was a douche he could’ve got a seat belt and a failure to signal (BS nobody was on the road , apparently there was at least a trooper) Answering a few more questions could’ve got him into more shit.

A wise old trooper once told me you only talk your way into jail, not out of it!

Even being a LEO, I don’t say much if I’m pulled over.

I’d rather go about my day and talking never got me there any faster.

I also don’t consent to searches. Again, I want to be on my way, and consenting to searches never got me on my way faster.

If the officer believes he has probable cause, he/she doesn’t need my permission and will search it anyway (readily mobile conveyance exception for any of you YouTube lawyers about to lose your shit on that sentence).

That's worked pretty well for me over the years. Only a couple of times when someone got uppity because I refused to consent to search. Not sure what the thinking is there.

Inexperience or ego to be honest.

I ask for consent to search sometimes when I have PC, just to help a case. But when I don’t and I’m just asking for the sake of asking, when someone says no, unless something is out of the ordinary, it’s usually followed by “okie doke, have a nice day sir/ma’am.”

There’s always plenty of people fucking up. There’s another chance on the next stop. No need to get emotionally attached or ego hurt on that one.

It’s funny how some people protest stops on the .com. It’s like that asshole buddy that was with you after getting a ticket.

So a trooper pulled over a couple a fellers speeding and all’s going well, he writes the ticket and as he hands it to the driver , he reached through the cab and slapped the shit out of the passenger. Passenger asks “the fuck was that for” Trooper says “that’s for when you get down the road and say if that motherfucker wrote me a ticket.....”

That's some funny shit right there, an very truthful as well!

That song an the other one from that era "Indiana Wants Me" has special meaning to me, as I was not a COC poster boy for Indiana after I ETS'ed uncle the first time in 1967. Damn that beings back memory's, thanks.

I think he did a good job. He pulled you over for a legit reason, he had the intuition to realize that there was a minor in the vehicle with a 33 yr old male she didn’t know after midnight, he investigated and came to the conclusion that there was nothing nefarious going on and sent you on your way. Sure it was inconvenient and maybe embarrassing but it would have been much more inconvenient for the 17 year old had you and the other adult been a creeps that were trying to traffic a 17 yr old runaway(which is very common actually) and the cop just said here’s your ticket now go do what you wish with the girl.
This right here is BS, there’s a fine line between doing your job and harassing people. What is your 26 years relative was with his 17 year old sister and her friend?

What if you were a little older and they are all your kids....this is 100% BS.... no improper dressing, drugs or maybe you picked them up at a bad part of town.. not buying the goodie goodie cop thing.

Community relations. The public's main source is their interaction with an officer on the side of the road. The officers attitude during this interaction goes a long way to the general perception of the PD. What is the actual percentage of "real criminals" discovered in regular traffic stops? 1% possibly? I will give you a crazy number and say 20%. So because of the hammer and nail mentality 80% of the general population is treated like crap? That goes a long way ingraining contempt for police. It's not that hard to understand.

Obviously something didn't look right to the cop. He's not randomly deciding to separate the parties involved to get their stories just to screw with a guy he pulled over for not using his blinker.

Had it appeared to be his family members, or appeared normal, he would have let them go on their way with either the blinker/seatbelt ticket or a warning, without separating and talking to anyone.

Stop with the police are out to get everyone conspiracy theories. Sure, there are some bad cops or asshole cops (just like in every job), but this instance appears to be someone doing their job extremely well.

For every story like this where someone was mildly inconvenienced because something didn't seem right, there are 1,000 stories that never get told where the cop takes care of his initial reason for the stop and sends someone on their way.

Look.. cops are assholes! Always sticking their nose into shit, and for some reason they never just stop and leave you alone when you announce that your American and have rights.

Dude did his fucking job, was professional about it, and let the guy off with a small bill for his time.

Does a Marine join to protect the constitution or to bully third world nations out of their oil?

Thats a fucked up line of reasoning aye?

CrazyHorse, hinky shit? Yeah, ok. You dont know shit about me. I was at a sports bar watching a hockey game with a few buddies. When I left, I saw my friend. There is a neighborhood directly across the street from the bar. She asked for a ride, I gave her a ride. Not everybody is looking to get their dick wet 24/7. As for the guy who said he wouldve left them there since her cousin was only 17, wow, youre paranoid. Sorry, but Im not that paranoid, nor that big of an asshole. I didnt ask for an ID because it was just a ride. If id asked how old she was and she lied and said "18", would it have mattered? The bar, and the spot I got pulled over is about 6 miles apart. No way the trooper saw me "picking up bitches at a bar". He was also coming south, and I was going north. And we only chatted for 5 minutes. So that scenario (saw me pick them up) is IMPOSSIBLE.

Heres an example. If you saw a high school aged girl broke down on the side of the road, are you going to stop and ask if shes ok, or just roll on by because she looks young? If you stop, you may be labeled a creep thats just trying to gain some brownie points or do some "hinky shit", and get interrogated when the police arrive...."How do you know this girl?"....."Were you following her?"..."You look familiar...".."Sit in the back until we can clear you. Its for your safety."...Because guys kidnap stranded motorists all the time and sell them into the sex trade, or murder them. Right? Sure.

So in short, DONT HELP ANYBODY! Youre going to sell them into the sex trade or murder them. Especially in the eyes of many people on this forum. Is this really the mentality? Or is it just good "police work"? I once gave a broken down guy a ride to the gas station (he had a gas can). Was that a bad move? Could it have been a drug deal in the eyes of the law? Having this stranger in my truck. VERY SUSPICIOUS! If I got pulled over and the cop asked me..."Whos your passenger?"....."I dont know him, Im just giving him a ride to the gas station." I can guarantee you, here, in this town, this it what would happen with these troopers now.

"Full cavity search! Hes clenching!" My friend who got her car gutted is lucky she didnt get a cavity search. Shes a model.

So who is the problem? Me? Or certain LE who think everybody is up to no good? There are some good ones, for sure. But the few bad ones need to be weeded out by the department, because it paints a bad light on the entire force. You guys dont want that, right? Especially in 2018 with all the BS going down involving politics/LE.

"The boys in blue stick together!" No, fuck that. Be the change. My dad is good friends with a cop (good guy) in the small town over, about 10 miles away. The cop told my dad his dept forced an officer to start (small town) wearing a body camera because they wanted to try and figure out why he was writing so many damn tickets. Yeah, hes the only one wearing a camera. And its not because hes a "super cop" with uncanny police ability. That is a good department. As for "Everybody hates cops until they need one." You mean like Parkland? Or Vegas? If everybody carried, things would sort themselves out real quick. Ya know, like things used to be. Everybody had a sword or a gun. And people were polite and respectful. If they werent, good chance that dickhead was going to get what was coming to him. Ive never in my 33 years NEEDED a cop. LE is a cleanup crew (no offense). Theyre 99% of the time called AFTER an altercation has occurred. What good is that? The world has went about just fine for thousands of years without LE. The people policed themselves and dealt with the bad guys accordingly. Oh, but we're "civilized" now. No, people are more out of control now than ever before according to statistics. Because EVERYTHING is against the law. And only the "system" can deal with them. If cops were taken off the streets tomorrow, the bad guys would be dealt with by the people. Without clogging up the courts with BS, nor costing the tax payers millions. Crime wouldnt win, believe me. If we started dealing with drugs like Duerte, modern LE would cease to exist in 2 years. What is the majority of police work? Drugs and traffic (revenue stream). Gangs would be wiped out in a month. There is an easy solution to every problem.

If somebody rear ends me, Ill call the police. If I get my head blown off, somebody else will call the police. The only emergency help Ill ever need is a ambulance/hospital and a firetruck in case my house catches fire. Have a nice day fellas.

Keep your head on a swivel and your powder dry. MAGA!

That's funny. The dude did his fucking job. Investigated a citizen for a possible crime? Not a reported crime but the possibility of a crime? Comparing that to an enlistment in the USMC?? Surely you jest?
Let's compare. USMC to defend the constitution abroad and domestic. Police. To protect and serve or to "police" by legally instigating an encounter with civilians to investigate whether there is the possibility of a crime?

Yeah that's pretty fucked up.

Now regardless of why we’re shooting hajis, the dutiful Marine does his job. Same as the cop! Don’t hate the player hate the game. If you can overturn the last 200 years of laws that progressively give police more power to do what we ask them to. Be my guest! I often think it would be nice to just face shoot fuckers that mess with my day. But the constitution isn’t about that shit. Would kinda make joe citizen judge jury and executioner.

So we have cops , that “protect and serve” ensuring that at the least you can contest his judgment in court. WTF would cops do if they didn’t stop anyone for violating laws that Americans voted Americans into office to pass?

Hopefully the mods figure out soon you're not smart enough to post here. Simple answer........you (and people like you) are part of the problem. Just like people who are too liberal, people like you are too far on the other side.

You're a butt hurt snowflake, settle down boy (also ignored, so spend your time replying to others).

Have a good day.

At the op, in your lawless utopia have you ever thought to consider what the father of the 17 yr old could’ve done to you?

But you wasn’t doing anything wrong!! However, Dad wasn’t bound by any codes or oaths to give a shit.

One snowflake found dead with a gunshot wound to the head. Let the animals deal with themselves huh?

Trust me your wrong on this one. How a war got into this I don't know, But I'll tell you one thing. Knowing what I know now about wars, the three people I should have hunted down an shot in my day, was LBJ, McNamara, an Westmoreland, an a Hugh chunk of the MIC. 58K + dead, 100's of K's wounded, 250-400 K with PTSD, Billions of dollars spent an for what? To proven a Fucking point,...

Or a bunch of people who actually use a bit of logic.

Sometimes you get a ticket, sometimes you don't. Next time, use your blinker like you agreed to when you signed for your driver's license.

Researcher's are finding that one of the biggest causes of snowflakes is because their parents spent too much time "warning" them and not delivering consequences.

Keep warning people = keep doing shit they shouldn't.

It's possible the OP getting the ticket will remind him to obey traffic laws in the future, which will in turn prevent another stop in which he could do something stupid and get hit, tasered, or shot.
