6X5 Thread V3.0

Hey guys welcome back to the "NEW OLD HIDE", its good to be home!

So getting back to business I am starting the 6X5 thread over from scratch. Same rules:

Rules are pretty simple. There must be exactly six groups of 5 shots, all on one target board. No more, no less. No foulers on this board, every shot on the board must count. The groups need to be shot consecutively, this is not a thread for someone to post up their collection of best six groups, but their best group of six groups. Entries must be shot on or after 10/19/14. For now, lets keep this a bipod/rear bag or shooting off a ruck challenge, no mechanical rests. If enough people feel I should change that up, please let me know and I'll reconsider. (I would like to keep this as close to prone shooting as we can, so if you are able then please shoot prone. However if you cant for health reasons or other plausible reasons then go to a bench and enter your target with pride. But if you just want to squeeze that last few thousanths out of your group come on, man up and go prone!)

Each entry should have a picture of the target board, with the group measurements written on it. Include a pic of your rifle as well, as well as info on your setup, and how it was shot, weather conditions, etc. Only the best entry per person/rifle combo will be kept on the board, but enter as many times as you like, and I'll count multiple entries from multiple rifles. Same goes with best group at every distance.

This time I am doing a seperate post for the 50, 100, and 200+ yard line entry just to keep it easier to read. I am going on the same old format and making a running tally not just the top 10 or whatever. You will also see that I have a post for cold bore groups. Lets keep it as honest as possable as cold bore means FIRST ROUND FIRED THAT DAY preoid, end of story. So a cold bore plus 4. I will do any yard line you want for the cold bore so 50, 100, 200+. If you would note the distance from center for the cold bore shot if it is easy to measure (if you throw down a CB +4 that measures in the 0.1XX" then who the hell cares about the deviation at that point it is all shooter and conditions).

**Let me know if you are shooting in air temps under 40f. I will note it on the results as there is always the big question how do rimfires shoot in the cold.**

I'm looking forward to shooting this. I've seen the thread on both older sites, but never took the time to see what my rimfires will do. I've got quite a few nice rifles, but this should let me know just how well I drive them.

Well here you go guys, I am looking forward to seeing the new thread take shape! I am currently without a functioning accurate rimfire, but I am in the process of building something new. I hope to have it up and running soon, but unfortunately the weather will be tough for rimfire here in Maine for the next 3 months at least. But with any luck I will be posting up some targets soon!
Well, Now I have a new excuse to get out and shoot some. Thanks for putting this up again Jesse and for preserving the old data. I still consider this to be one of the toughest tests of rifle/shooter for a given distance. 30 great shots in a row are just so tough to do. Takes a ton of concentration, good conditions, great ammo and no distractions. Back to the old, new hide, lol.

Irish,
Good to see you made it back. I agree this little challenge is a tough one! I feel like it is most difficult at 50 yards vs 100, 200, or more only because at the longer distances I "have an excuse". I am slightly joking by saying that, but the truth is I get more mentally fatigued at 50 than the longer distances because I know what is possible by watching you guys shoot so damn good. I cant wait till spring, its a long time coming here in Maine, we got 24" of snow today...

Need to ask the Admin to make this a "Sticky". Supposed to be 65 deg F this weekend in KY. Nice. You Yankees need to keep all that Noreaster stuff north of the Mason-Dixon Line... Irish

5-10 winds this weekend and in the 50s in WI. I might try to squeeze in some 22 time inbetween all the centerfire stuff I have going.

Rules are pretty simple. There must be exactly six groups of 5 shots, all on one target board. No more, no less.
No foulers on this board, every shot on the board must count. The groups need to be shot consecutively,
this is not a thread for someone to post up their collection of best six groups, but their best group of six groups.
For now, lets keep this a bipod/rear bag or shooting off a ruck challenge, no mechanical rests.
Distances to be attempted in the challenge are 50, 100 and 200 yards.
Measurement of each 5 shot group is center to center.
Record measurements on your target, then post an image.
Entries must be shot on or after 02/10/2017.

Include a picture of your shooting setup along with the target results.

If you need a target, here's one, 8.5x11 in pdf format.
Download, open, print actual size (100%)

Do we just post the best group?

And when does it end, or is it ongoing year long kind of deal?

jbell runs it until he feels like it's time to start a new one.
I post a target with my best results, if another target improves on the previous one
I post it and jbell updates the standings. You can see where shooters have posted previously
in the 50 yard, 100 and 200 yards results and with different rimfire calibers, 22lr, 17 hmr and 22 wmr.
It's a good excuse to spend time at the range and comment on everyone's results/rifles/wind skills.

So, something like this,

Remington 40x 22LR
Redfield 3200 20x
Lapua Center-x
Harris bipod
Shot prone in 30*F temperature

Or would something like OnTarget be better?
(Target to the left was shot after the 6x5 but I'm not really looking to score this ATM anyways)

Avg. .419 smallest grp. .244. Nice shooting Rhyno, particularly on a thirty degree day. Did you notice any difference in the Center-x's performance in the cold?

I actually just got the rifle a couple weeks ago, and it hasn't been warm yet haha.

this weekend might be nice, next week will be better I think. I'm curious to find out.

So, something like this,

Remington 40x 22LR
Redfield 3200 20x
Lapua Center-x
Harris bipod
Shot prone in 30*F temperature
Rhyno, Great shooting. I used to shoot a 40x with peeps just like that in college. Great rifles. If you can include the average group size c-c in inches and MOA and the best group size, that will work. Love that old vintage scope. You can re-enter if you shoot a better card later or can enter another rifle. The key is shoot six consecutive 5-shot groups all in a row. It takes 30 great shots without a single slip up to do it well. Great test of shooter and equipment. When people ask me what kind of rifle to get. I tell em to scroll down the list in the 6x5 and pick out the best shooters and conform to their concept of a good rifle and needs. Are they hunting? shooting benchrest? or tactical rimfire matches? For example if they are shooting tactical long distance rimfire and need the ability to shoot many different distances in a single match they would steer well clear of my heavy Anschutz single shot tgt rifle and its old obsolete Unertl tgt optic. They do great punching paper at one distance but it takes 20min of farting around with the objective to adjust that scope from 50y to 100y. Not practical for tactical matches or hunting situations since it feels like it weights 30lbs, lol. Fun to shoot for its supreme accuracy but totally impractical. A hunter might even go with a lighter slightly less accurate combo since their goal includes being able to locate the squirrel or other game in the field of view and a 32x fixed power scope that works great at the range is useless in the field. Give up a little accuracy to gain more utility in the field. It is a balancing act to be sure. And a great excuse to own five or six 22 rifles. Lets see, there is the tgt rifle, the sporter class practical rifle, the upland grey squirrel rifle, the lowland red squirrel rifle, the garbage rat rifle, the crow shooter, the varmint hunter, the steel challenge shooter, on and on.....

This one is certainly capable of better, I'm just not up to the task yet.

I'm already planning on getting another one sometimes to make more like my regular rifle, with a better stock and scope.

this one will stay like this as long as the scope works.

Steve, I am assuming that was shot at 50 yards, let me know if not and I will move the results to the 100 yard section. Not too bad with Mini Mags, I have always liked that ammo!

Yes sir it was 50 yards I apologize for not putting it in there. Thanks that savage shoots minimags pretty well. I'll Re shoot it when I get some good ammo at 50 and 100.
Thanks for posting it!

It definitely can be a challenge. I finally got out to shoot my new project 22lr this past weekend, but with temps in the high 20's and 10-15mph winds not much was getting done. Unfortunately I think I am going to be sending my rifle off to have some work done on it in the near future.

Decided to shoot the 6x5 with my Fo Fiddy Five Precision Trainer with the 22 mag barrel. Scope is a 16x Sightron S3 I bought used here a few years ago.

Winds were around 5mph with a few reverses thrown in just for the hell of it. 60 degrees.

A pic of the rifle..

Ammo was CCI A22. It's about the only thing I find locally other than the 30grain vmax stuff. Both loads seem to be quite temp sensitive. The colder it is, the more flyers I have.

Looking forward to testing it in some nicer weather. Distance was 100yds.

Okay, it's been since the original thread since I shot this so here's a new 50yd entry. I shot this one prone on the bipod/rear bag with the same CZ as in 2013 but it's been tuned up a bit. Now it's got the DIP magwell, mag release, firing pin spring and 25moa base. Glass is now a Vortex 5-15x midway special. Still on the factory trigger adn stock but it's been pillared and bedded up into the barrel channel then threaded and is always shot with a Surefire Ryder S on it.

Nice job Hookturnr, especially for a factory barrel and mid grade ammo. There is something to be said for a factory rifle (all be it slightly tuned) and medium priced ammo, they can be very accurate and consistent as you have shown. I bet you can get the average well below MOA if you want to just by playing around with some better ammo, give Center X and Eley Match a shot. Also one other ammo I never leave off the table is CCI standard velocity, its damn hard to beat for the $.

I've tried cci SV and it doesn't shoot bad in this gun but it's not great either. SK Std.+ is slightly more open than the Norma match. I haven't gotten into more expensive ammo yet but it's on the menu...I think I'm going to restock it with a tacticool first unless I find a screaming deal on a Manners..

Just a thought, but I would work on ammo testing before spending $ on any component (unless the factory stock is just completely uncomfortable for you). That way you know the full accuracy potential of the factory barrel, especially with the stock having been bedded. If ultimate accuracy is your primary focus.

64 MPR at 98 yds. Light variable winds. 50 degrees.
MHH- If you don't mind me asking, what is the combined weight of your MPR with the scope and all mounted on it? I have been jones'ing for another Annie and the MPR or the AV 18" threaded are both on my list. Looking for something light enough to carry and hunt with but heavy and accurate enough for occasional precision events like sillouette or other things. Hoping to wind up in the 7lbs range or so. I have a Model 52 carbine that is too heavy due to its very heavy bbl profile and its old school 2lb B&L optic. Fine for range work but too heavy for toting up and down our Appalachian Mtns all day long.

Irish, you might consider the 52B and 52C Sporter reintroductions. Mine comes in at under 8.5lbs with steel rings and bases. The rings are Burris Sigs. with inserts and they hold a VariXIII 4.5-14 LR. If I remember correctly, it shot a .314 average in the old 6/5 thread.

The rifle is both visually and functionally very well balanced.

Hey Irish,

I'm afraid the rifle alone weighs 9lbs unscoped. It's a heck of a rifle, but quite a bit heavier than what you're looking for.

The 52C Sporter is under 8.5# with the the scope. The 8.5# threshold is significant for some bench and silhouette classes. The negative for these rifles is that the trigger is about 3# after removal of what is called the "lawyer pin".

As the rest of my precision rifles triggers are between 2.5 & 3# this has not been an issue for me.

Thx MHH, I was afraid of that. As for the 52C sporter, I would love to have a nice example of that classic old rifle but I thought they ended production over 40yrs ago? Is Winchester making them again?

Irish, Browning reintruced the 52C in the early '90s. The rifles were built by Miroku and total production was 5000. AT the end of the 1990s there was another "reissue" under the Winchester name. These rifles were designated 52B Sporter. These rifles have more drop than the 52C Sporter the forearm screw of the 52 B but still retain the Micromotion trigger of the 52C..
The reissues have been steadily escalating in pric. Miroku has done other models for Winchester and Browning to include the 1885,1886, 1892, 1895, Mlodel 12, etc. Their build quality is superb. If you want more info. go to RimfireCentral

CZ 455 VPT with a Bushnell Tactical 6-24. This rifle seems to really like the RWS Rifle Match.

I like the Glades Armory bolt handle upgrade...

Anschutz 64R with Burris XTRII 5-25. Still working to adjust the comb to set at a comfortable height and cant. Too many options can be a curse...
