My loaded necks are .289 so I'm using a .288 bushing. YMMV though

I have 300 pieces of Lapua brass all the same lot number and loaded neck is very consistant at .289 to .2895. Other lot numbers may vary in thickness.

40gr. H4350, 140gr. Berger Hybrid, CCI 450 primer

This load bugholes out of my 27in. Bartlein barrel... I don't have excess to a Chrono yet although...

41gr- 41.5gr. H4350 is a bugholer also, just find your barrels best .1 increment within that window and you will be happy....

I am shooting 39 grs RL15 and 123 Scenars,,have tried all 3 primers you listed and seem to get better results at 800-1000 yards with tthe 450 magnum primers,,I have not spent many rounds across chronie just checked a few after deciding on the load,,sometimes I will let a chronie talk me into using a load that doesnt shoot as well as another ,,

8 twist 28.25 inch 5R Bartlien with Lapua brass,CCI 450 primers 39 grs RL15 123 Scenars loaded to 2.720 with .020 jump shoots lights out and with 300 yard zero takes 7 minutes to zero at 600,13.5 at 800 and 21.25 at 1000

Looking for a little help with a load for a 6.5x47 Lapua with 108 Scenars. I realize that there are better bullets at the heavier weights but we have a shoot that has a weight limit. Barrel is a 26" Bartlein, 8 twist.

Any help is greatly appreciated...Sig Marine

I havent tried the 108 but have some and plan on it ,,I have shot some 100 NBT with IMR8208 and was getting 3200 fps and very good accuracy at 100 yards,,I never tried it any further but it shot the most impressive looking groups at 100 yards I have seen from this rifle,,

I started at 36 grs and worked up and finally just quit at 38.5 as the accuracy was unreal and 3200 seemed fast enough,,

I was shooting a .288 and was getting a lot of burned powder marks all over my necks. Just bought 3 bushings to try, (.289, .290, .291).... I figured the answers in them sizes some where. Going to try the .290 first.

The first thing I thought of off the top of my head was that the neck was sized to small and didn't seal the neck chamber area right.. We'll see when I use this larger bushing I guess..

2911 fps out of my 26" Bartlein

I am aggravated that the newest (9th) edition of Hornady's Reloading Manual doesn't even list the 6.5x47. I wanted to see what they had for the 140 amax loads. I have lots of Reloader 15 and a few pounds of Reloader 17.

Generally this means insufficient neck tension or necks need annealing.
If you think about sequence of events then you want the neck to release and seal against chamber behind launching bullet, if bullet launches before seal is formed then you get sooty necks from insufficient tension.

About to have a 6.5x47 built and have 8lbs of IMR 4350 left over from a 300 WSM that I no longer have and would like to use it. From the burn rate charts it seems it is very close to H4350 but I see no load data here. Anyone here used the IMR 4350 or have a opinion on it?

Found the load. I was seating the bullets too deep. Adjusted OAL to 2.7" and dropped the charge and nearly every charge was grouping well. Went with 39.3 grains of RL17 and was getting 2836 fps. Shooting a 26" Bartlein barrel suppressed with a Thunder Beast 30BA.

The only problem I have run into is the seating stem. I have the amax seating stem and when I put a 140gr Berger hybrid in it, it seems to hit the tip first before fully seating in the stem. The 140gr amax seems to seat fine. Just wondering if anyone has had this problem.

I run 39.4 g of h4350 behind my 123amx in 21.75" bartlein and get great accuracy and somewhere in the mid 2900's. RL15 is a touch faster and don' need as much somewhere in the 37.4-.6 range. I'd start at 36.8 and work ladder up from there.

I would like to know what if anything you are doing about the neck expander in the re-sizing die? No matter what bushing I use as I retract the case it goes back across the neck expander and opens it back up. I have been slowly reducing the diameter of the neck expander in .0005" increments to see if I can get to the point that this doesn't keep happening. I can't be the only one though.

Remove the expander or keep reducing the diameter. Best to just remove it though.

Yeah you need to remove the expander ball. By using the expander ball, you are negating the self centering neck you get by using the bushing die. There should be another depriming pin holder in your die box to replace the expander ball with.

My thinking on this process is that the neck bushing does little for neck tension when using the large expander ball. Even though you are making the neck .288 on the outside, the expander ball is going to create it's own diameter inside the neck thus changing your outside dimension. The way to compensate for this is to change the diameter of the expander ball to the diameter/tension you want the INSIDE of the neck to be. The way to do this would to purchase an expander ball kit from Whidden Gun Works and use it in conjunction with the appropriate neck sizing bushing to attain the desired neck tension. Others change out the expander ball to the small one provided with the dies and then use only the neck bushing to set tension.

I haven't personally used IMR 4350, but have heard of satisfactory results using approximately one grain less than the same load using H4350. IMR is probably a little more temperature sensitive. Give it a try, and post your results!

I haven't tried the IMR 4350 with my 6.5X47 yet, but I'm using 40.5gr H4350 140 Hybrids. It also likes 37.5gr varget. With my 7-08, both 4350's use the same load. I wouldn't hesitate using the IMR with the 6.5 lapua.

Going to start

Br4 primers,

RL 15
my question is anyone have experience with a similar load w the 130 vld and RL 15?

Not sure what happened, but my barrel has shown some signs of improvement.

Velocity dropped to 2690 fps with ES averaging 7fps. A little slower than I wanted, but the ES and down range performance has been great. Just hit 299 rounds, so the barrel could speed up a bit. Will have to wait and see.

I did the load work up on the 26" Bartlein 6.5x47L barrel with a Bighorn TL2 in a Manners mini-chassis and tested this past weekend. Not the fastest load, but damn it's accurate with 100 yard 5-shot groups of 3/8" and 300 yard groups of 1".

It sucks because on my cousins 20 inch AXMC and 140's it hammers with 38 grains. So far H4350 seems to group better in a side by side ladder test at 325. I will post pictures in the reloading section for a more professional analysis.

That is crazy, never heard of a x47 that wouldn't group well with Varget. My 300y ladder test was with 35.8-37.4 and printed a verticle of about 1.25" top to bottom of the test. I now attempt all ladder tests at 600y.

41 grains gave 2862 sd-12/es-33 for 5 and 42 grains gave 2921 sd-6/es-12 for 4 shots.

I had been using cci400 primers but popped a few in the Ruger Precision Rifle (bolt is not bushed) and retested those with thicker cupped CCI #41's with no issues. However, it was about 20 degrees cooler by the time I retested them.

Barrel is a 26" masterpiece chambered by Patriot Valley Arms.

My 140 Hybrid load using H4350 is running 2774

I have also used 139L and 140 a-max which all seem to shoot well in the 40.3-40.8 weight range

Factory DTA barrel, 8.5 twist 26", plenty of freebore.
130 berger ar hybrid
42.2 h4350
2.753 coal - roughly .020" jump
CCI br4.
2923 fps w/ Single digit 5 shot string ES

This same charge of 42.2 h4350 shoots great if you swap in cci 450s and/or 130 hunting vlds (2.783 coal to get same jump). Br4s seem to add 10 fps and tighten velocity extreme spreads from low teens to single digits.

140 Hybrid @ 2.775" COAL, ~.025" jump

IMR4451:

39.3 - 2715fps
39.6 - 2745fps
39.9 - 2755fps
40.2 - 2795fps - no ejector mark or stiff bolt, but starting to crater primer pretty good, a dead give away of a max sane load in this gun.

All shoot well (2" 12-shoot group of a hodgepodge combination these test loads @ 600 yards) but 39.9 is best; ~2" vertical @ 900 yards.

Just a reference for speeds as no solid group data or ES/SD data has been recorded yet. I have just been running these loads for barrel break in during a few club matches. Not break-in procedures as mentioned all over the place, but just getting it past 200 rounds to get beyond the point that the barrel tends to speed up on some rifles. I'll do load development when time allows and post up more info then.

232 rounds down the barrel

My load development consist of a mix of the ladder and OCW methods. I load and shoot three of each charge at the same POA at 500 yards. I then mark the center of each group and the charges that fall closest together are noted as my accuracy node. I typically load .4gr between each charge. Makes it easy to split the difference between charges when I find the node.

Anyway, I used this procedure for my 6.5x47 recently, with 130gr VLDs lightly kissing the lands, Varget and CCI 450s. I observed that all six shots from 37.4 and 37.8gr went into about 2" at 500 yards. That looked good to me, so I loaded up a bunch of 37.6gr and the result is below, also 500 yards. 26" Criterion barrel.

Did the same procedure using H4350 and 140gr ELDs. Loaded 40gr, 40.4gr, 40.8gr and 41.2gr. The first three charges put all nine shots into about 3" at 500 yards. I'm going to load up 40.4gr and call it good.

Started my load development for my new 6.5x47.
Hornady 140 ELD-M
IMR 4451
CCI 450 primers
OAL at ogive 2.111" which is .015" off the lands

Rifle is a bighorn action, 24" krieger Remington varmint built by John Beanland, and running a silencerco specwar. Has 174 rounds through it now

I loaded up 4 at each charge shot 1 of each to check velocity and for pressure then shot 3 shot groups at 200 at each charge.

38.9 2690fps .188" group on centers

39.3 2741fps ( I had 1 bullet that I accidentally seated deep so used that for velocity instead of group, might explain the jump in velocity) 1.058" group on centers. ( I had 2 into .213" centers, last shot the guy next to me shot his 300 mag right as I was breaking and I feel that I pulled the shot, might just be an excuse)

39.7 2726fps .6" centers
40.1 2759fps 1.06" centers
40.5 2794fps .823" centers
40.9 2823fps 1.838"
41.3 2832fps 1.482"
41.5 2834fps .246"
41.8 2877fps 1.13"

I had 1 very very light ejector mark at 40.9, and 41.3. I had 2 very light ejector marks at 41.5, and all 4 had light marks at 41.8

Nice! I have marks on my brass but it looks like extractor swipe, looks nothing like any ejector or plunger mark i've ever seen. Granted it's the tempest and my first custom.

I had been loading on my balance beam all this time and 36 on that measured 36.2 on both my chargemaster and my gempro. So probably will change it to 36.2gr, maybe reshoot 36.5 and 37. I got sloppy after i shot the group above because i figured i'd found it.

Wish they would add IMR 4166 and 4155 to the 6.5x47L data on their site.

JM, i actually received an email yesterday or so for the 500ct coming back in stock at midway. So while i think there is a wait, you can definitely get them. I plan on going to the 130gr AR Hybrid which is what i told chad i would shoot. Plus it can run dual purpose from what i've seen the hybrid line has become a fantastic line of hunting bullets.

I'm brand new to PRS style shooting. I'm currently shooting a Ruger RPR in 6.5 Creedmoor. Being left handed I've quickly realized I need a left handed action. I'm having a rifle built in 6.5X47 Lapua. Since H4350 seems to be impossible to purchase I've been loading with IMR4451. Will IMR 4451 be an effective powder for 6.5x47? Do any of you have load data using it?

Give varget a try as well, depending on what bullet you choose you'll have a little more room for seating. I have really good results out of the 140 RDF's and varget. The RDF's like to jump and with 4350 it was a very compressed load resulting in inconsistent seating depths.

I've run up to 37.8 gr of varget with no pressure signs on the 140 RDF's but my accuracy load is 37.5. Your mileage may vary. I havnt run the hybrids with varget so I can't comment their but the above statement is true about the RDF's having more bearing surface though so you'll get higher pressures faster

I run 4451 in my 6x47L with 105's. Its a great shooter. 4451 = varget, but it shoots a bit dirtier imho.

In my 6.5x47L I am running Varget behind Berger 130 H-vld's @ 2975. I tried H4350, but it compresses a bit much and has less speed. You will run into pressure a small bit quicker with 4451 in a 6.5 over H4350 shooting 140's.

If your rifle is not chambered yet, you may think about a creedmoor again so you can run the ELD 147's. They seat pretty deep in the 47 cases tho, so I chose speed over running the heavies. With lapua brass out now, they will pressure up nicely. You could also run RL 16 if you chose a creed. Just throwing a few ideas out there for ya.

I normally run only vld's in my 47's so there is less compression. Varget/4451 will work with both the 130 and 140 bullets.

If you get your gun and still need a place to start, I can load up a few tester cases to give you an idea of speeds. I would first decide on what bullet you would like to shoot. As stated above, bearing surface will play a part in pressure.

Thanks for the info, it is very helpful as I learn the ins and outs of precision loading. Loading .223 for 3 gun is a much simpler process :)

I haven't invested much into the process at this point aside from a set of 6.5 creedmoor dies. I am leaning towards the 6.5x47 for the longer barrel and brass life. I can use whatever bullets work. I was curious about IMR 4451 as I have a bunch. I can try other powders for the 6.5x47 as long as it isn't H4350. I'm not even sure H4350 is real, as I've never seen it in real life. :)

Be aware that with lapua making creed brass now, the 47's will not be so magical. If you worked your hornady brass, they were almost equal. If I had to choose a cartridge again, the creed makes a better argument over the 6.5x47L for 1 reason....powder selection. You have to watch like a hawk to find H4350 while RL16 is at the store in 8#'s.

I ran some 4451 thru a creed I had. It took a bit more powder, but my SD was lower with H4350. The exception to this are the lapua 308 converts I was running, the 4451 ran well.

I only shoot local matches, but there are some guys already running the 6 and 6.5 creeds on lapua brass. Both run very well. I live in a dominant 47's world here. It's track record speaks for itself. The creed is just the newer kid on the block.

40.4gr H4350 and Cci 450 primer with 140 eld or 142smk both 60 thou off(long freebore) hammers at 2750 about 1" of elevation dispersion @ 300 and i blame some of that on lack of annealing or cleaning.

Are you trying to get people to stop buying 6.5x47L brass so you can get some? lol

6.5x47L isn't going anywhere even with the introduction of Lapua 6.5CM brass. The cartridge is too damn efficient, too accurate, and already has a very well established reputation. It's always given up speed to the other 6.5s but it's brass life is still impeccable, even by Lapua standards.

How does the creed make a better argument in regards to powder? I think that's completely subjective.

Not at all brother !!! lol

Where I live the 47's dominate. They have been the best cartridge for years..and will continue to hold their own. I will say that I think they perform best with a slight compression. My varget load is just below getting compressed, but runs well. They are the workhorse of the 6 and 6.5 world.

Much of it is what bullet you are wanting to shoot. Everyone I know runs H4350 in their 6.5's. This is the focus of that statement. You can't just walk into the store and pick up a few 1 or 8#'s of it. I was also thinking in the back of my mind the new 147's. I have several thousand of them, but decided to go for speed since they seat really deep. In the creed case, you can run 4451, 4350, rl 16, 4831sc with it. I have a new creed in the build barn and its going to get the 147's with RL16 I think. It will run 2800 on the new lapua brass.

For the record, I own a 6x47 and 6.5x47. The 6.5 is my current match gun. They do not give up speed imho. Performance is subjective, but being able to buy powder is not. Stack it deep.

Loaded up some groups with the 130gr hybrids and IMR 4166 from 36-37gr in 1/2gr increments. Thus far much more consistent than the Normas. I'm going to see if i can manage to push further as i haven't come across pressure signs yet and other than my fault with fliers 36 and 37 look pretty decent. I think i can tighten up 37gr. I hope i can get 2900fps this time around.

I've posted this elsewhere too, but seems like it may be a good fit here.

Occurred to me that since the 147gr ELDs are such heavy for caliber bullets that maybe a slower than normal burning powder might work well. Turned out to be so. Here's 10 shots from my 6.5x47 with 7828ssc. Didn't chrono this particular charge, but 41.2gr clocked about 2715. I suspect these will run about 2740.

I saw a couple guys in here with 21-22"barrels. Anybody running a 18-20 incher with 120-130 grain bullets?
I have no first hand experience with the shorter barrels, but I've seen post from people with 18-20 in barrels with pretty good results. I would think with the 120-130 class pills it would be fine especially with something like varget behind it vs H4350

My match loads,

140 Berger Hybrid
37.4 grains Varget
cci 41 primer
2.075" to ogive
2786 fps, 24" barrel
about 1.5" vertical at 600 yards

130 Berger Hybrid
36.6 grains H4895
cci br4 primer
2.085" to ogive
~2850 fps, 24" barrel
less than 1" vertical at 600 yards

my practice load is the similar to the first. Change the 140 Hybrid to the 140 Barnes Matchburner and seat 2.085" to the ogive.

Give varget a try as well, depending on what bullet you choose you'll have a little more room for seating. I have really good results out of the 140 RDF's and varget. The RDF's like to jump and with 4350 it was a very compressed load resulting in inconsistent seating depths.
I am also running H4350 under a 140 RDF and you have to use a drop tube in order to reduce the amount of compression/ seating depth inconsistencies.

Anyone tried RL16 yet? I'm thinking once i run out of 4166 i might try some, but i'm also sitting on 16lbs of varget.
i can't comment on the RL16 but I've had excellent results with varget. I started using varget instead of 4350 when I switched over the the 140 RDF's. 37.5 gr of varget gives me 2760 fps single digit SD's and groups in the .2's

We run varget in pretty much all our rifles at the house. Which is why i went to 4166 or generic varget rather lol. It's given me okay velocity. I was running 36.2gr with the 130gr normas and have since pushed to 37gr with the 130gr AR Hybrid. Are you seeing any pressure signs above 37? I know max is considered 36gr for both varget and 4166 but i have a friend as i said before running 38gr. Trying to reach 2900fps if i can but i will take 2800-2850 if i must. Thinking i'm going to do Scott Saterlee's latter test with 10rds in .2 increments and see how it fairs.

I've run up to 38 gr without any pressure signs but accuracy fell off the higher I went. 37.5 is actually a fairly mild load in my rifle. You should be able to reach 2900 fps pretty easy with the 130's as for the 140's I'd say that be a far reach. I'm running a 24 in barrel and with 40.5 gr of H4350 was getting 2890 fps with the 130 vdl's. I havnt tried any 130's with varget though.

If speed is of big importance to you I was able to get 3000 fps with the 130 vdl's with reloder 17. I can't remember the charge weight off the top of my head but I did have a hint of hard bolt lift but just a hint. The only problem with reloder 17 is it's so temp sensitive. I had great accuracy with various loads using reloder 17 but moved on because of the temp issues

It's of some importance but not to the point i'd be willing to switch to a temp insensitive powder.

anyone here got data or tried the 108 scenar or 107 matchking, the matchking G7.230 form factor .954. Hodgon lists max loads around 39g of varget for the 107 matchking and 3100fps, I run this through JBM and it looks very promising. Ive got 123 scenars and as I understand the 108 scenar is the exact same shape with less lead so I could load them to the same length.

More results from 7828ssc. I'm finding this powder to be a very viable option in the x47 with 140gr and heavier bullets. My rifle has a .167 freebore which puts a 140gr hybrid far enough up the neck when touching the lands to leave plenty enough room for a slower burning powder. Results are in the attached picture. Good accuracy and good SDs. These are five shot groups. Haven't even played with seating depth yet. Also going to try 42.4gr.

Have also tried it with the 147gr ELDs and got pretty good velocity (2740) and decent accuracy. That's a ten shot group.

anybody tried the 147 ELD-M and if so with what powders and are you able to get 2750 fps with a 27.5 inch bbl,,,,if I cant get to 2750 accurately I will just stick with what I am shooting now,,,
thanx
See my post above too. From my 26" Criterion barrel, I got 2750 with H4350 but that load was too hot, showing some ejector hole marks. 7828ssc gave me 2740 with no pressure signs and I probably could have upped the charge a little. I'm thinking 4831sc would work well with the 147s too.

So, a buddy of mine tried 4831sc behind 147gr ELDs from his x47 with very poor results. Velocities were extremely slow. He ran out of case capacity before getting to even 2500fps. This was from a 24" Bartlein. Not sure why 7828ssc has worked so much better for me in my x47. 4831sc and 7828ssc are not very far apart in the burn rate charts. It is possible that my lot of 7828ssc is just abnormally fast burning, as it gives much higher than expected velocities from my son's .270.

Anyway, it appears that 4831sc is a no-go in the x47 case.

I tried the 142 Nosler LRAB and RL19 a couple days ago,,I only did pressure tests to find what the max charge would be and if in fact I could get enough RL19 in the 47L case to get a max charge,,,all while checking for speed with the Magnetospeed V2 ,,

I shot 2 shots per charge starting at 43 grs and worked up .5 at a time and with a 12" drop tube and a slow pour was able to get 45 grs RL19 in the case to the bottom of the neck and 45 grs RL19 with the 142 LRAB clocked 2912 and 2915 for the 2 shots,,,,I think that is enough good news to buy a box of the 147s and see if I can get any kind of accuracy from them and make enough speed for them to be worthwhile,,

there are lots of powders now days between H4350 and RL22 to try and there very well could be something that will make use of these 147s in the 47mm Lapua case,,

Hondo I'm still keen to give the 4831sc a try in my 47. Is anyone here mathematically inclined want to have a go at how much 4831sc I could fit in using 140 RDF overall length 1.420, my freebore is .250. If I seated these out to the lands they should be around 2.9 COAL. But I have seen people back calculate how much powder you could get in based on these variables but I'm not very math inclined anyone wanna have a guess?

If gambeling I would set the over under at 45.2 grs using a drop tube and a slow swirl pour,,,if dumping from a measure 43.5

I didnt have any trouble getting 45 grs of RL19 in and not have any up in the neck,,,but my brass is one of the old lots of Gold Box
