    Introduction with Mosin Sniper Porn

I've been reading this site for at least a few years, now. However, I just registered, today. I'm thrilled to see a vintage forum here and hoping to see a lot more of what we came here for....vintage sniper rifles! I'm into all kinds of rifles, but WW2 is my cup of tea. I have about 25 Mosins, of which, 12 are original snipers, or "ex-snipers", of some form and I have owned many others.

Some of you guys who know me may have already seen these, but since I'm newly registered here, I thought I would offer them up as an "introduction" of sorts.

    1934 Tula PE:

    Finn Capture 1938 Tula PEM:

    Enjoy!

Re: Introduction with Mosin Sniper Porn

Very nice collection man, and welcome to the hide. I have recently converted my brother in law into a nagant shooter. With a modern scope, and bent bolt it is now a $400 semi-precision rifle with super cheap ammo. Getting him a first round hit at 610 yds on steel was so fun! He is hooked. It's not a collectors setup, but to me collector pieces are funner when they are practical. I would love to at least try out one of the real sniper nagants with the 4 power post optic someday, if not own one.

    Thanks, guys!

I got lucky on the '34 PE. I had an insider at one of the major vendors, who sorts through their milsurps when they come in, keep an eye out for me. 1934 is one of the least common years for snipers (very few made) and when he told me the bore was excellent, too... that's all I needed to hear!

    Joop,

As an avid collector of all things military, guns and old your post has piqued my interest. Would you mind laying out some of the things a person looking to fill a "single" hole in their collection should look for regarding Mosin Snipers? I have been looking for an M-38 to go with the 2 "standard" rifles I have but would like some info on the sniper variants if you are inclined to share.

    Cheers,

    Doc

I second what Doc said. I'm interested in what you look for. Also do you favor going through an inside guy or are there still good rifles to be had at some of the major gun shows?

Re: Introduction with Mosin Sniper Porn

Thanks again for the comments, guys.

For starters, check out www.mosinnagant.net This sight is a great resource, especially for snipers (when you start clicking through the various sections/articles, you'll find them). Another site is: www.7.62x54r.net which has excellent informational sections with a plethora of good photos on many, many aspects of Mosin rifles. Personally, I'm not a fan of their forums, so I stay away from there. My favorite forum for all things Mosin, is at Gunboards. The collector's forum and the sniper rifle forum there are great, with very knowledgeable people and a very high level of traffic. If you have questions, that's a great place to start. My only words of warning; Don't call an Izhevsk arsenal rifle an "Izzy", or a Mosin rifle a "Nagant" and any talk about sporterizing, or any other Bubba activity is very frowned upon. Don't let that scare you, though. There's a lot of great folks there.

As for my personal recommendation, I would revert back to my first paragraph, to read and learn as much as you can. There are many different nuances to Mosins, especially the snipers and it really takes a while to get comfortable with all of the variations and particulars. If I were looking to get a "representative" Mosin sniper, it would be a PU rifle from RGuns. These are, in most cases, all matching/original guns that may have been refurbished to some degree. Don't let the "refurb" talk scare you, however. These were done in a much different fashion than the hundreds of thousands of standard M91/30 rifles that have flooded the market. A lot more care was taken to keep original parts with their original guns and most, if not all serial numbers are original to the gun, not ground/restamped, electro-penciled, etc. Be aware, however that it was common for some guns to have their scope numbers and rifle serial number EP'd onto the scope mount. This is typically found on Izhevsk arsenal PUs and is considered to be "correct". I could go on for pages about this, but if you read the links above, you'll start to see what I'm getting at. The point is that the PU rifle is the most recognized Mosin sniper and also the most available and at a reasonable price. Just beware of the repros that are also flooding the market, usually for much cheaper.

Now, when you get into the earlier snipers ("earlier" is usually considered to be from 1932-1942), it's a much different ball game. Original rifles from this time period are extremely rare. Most of mine are restored "ex-snipers" and this is the most likely avenue of finding/owning such a piece. Even so, a project like this can cost a good amount of money (especially to someone used to paying $79 for a standard 91/30). The interesting part, is that the rifles, while they don't exactly grow on trees and this really varies by year, etc., are not the hardest part to find. It's the optics and mounts. There are repros out there, but even some of these can become expensive and hard to find.

I could probably go on for pages and not really do the subject justice. However, I'm willing to answer specific questions, any time. Feel free to post them or PM me.

    Thanks again,

    John

joop has a long presence on gunboards,i think. i have said it before. if you are going to pay real money for a 91/30 sniper, you better learn a bunch. there are hundreds of humped examples out there. i would bet against most any PE or PEM being real, but maybe not. gunboards is were you want to look and especially look at posts by guys called marcus, vic and KH on there. they are about the tops in the world on the subject. nice collection-you have all three variations. congrats.

Welcome aboard. That's a very nice collection of Mosin Nagants, and that 34 PE is really really cool. Congrats on that snag!

Very true, Mike. Vic (site owner), Marcus (extremely advanced collector) and CH (a Finn with an amazing collection, himself) are the guys that I look up to. There are other forums dedicated to Mosins and Mosin snipers, but none come close to Gunboards, in my opinion. I do want to emphasize, again, my excitement over seeing a Vintage forum here, though. When I'm looking for technical stuff as it applies to my modern, "precision" rifles, this is the site I come to. It's nice to see a section devoted to the guns that really started it all.

That is a big collection of Mosin sniper rifles!

I'm impressed. I've been tempted here and there to build one cheap nockoff, but haven't ever gotten around to it.

Re: Introduction with Mosin Sniper Porn

I was wondering if you could explain to me why the original "sniper" mosin's are over $400 dollars from places like century arms and southern Ohio guns? I understand there is the rarity and the cool factor, but is that all? I got my mosin with a laminated stock in pristine condition for $100. Other than the original optic and bent bolt whats the big difference? I have always wondered about that because I love my mosin it is a blast to shoot, I just couldn't figiure out why the sniper ones are so much more expensive.

The rifles that you're referring to are actually reproductions made with newer scopes and mounts on rifles that were never originally snipers. The guns that were built as snipers will always carry a higher value for their originality, of course. As for how they shoot, I don't think that anybody has proven that "snipers" shoot consistently better than "standard" rifles. It's been suggested that rifles were selected to be snipers at the end of the production line, based on their accuracy. While this is most likely true, there have been recent serial number studies that would suggest that both arsenals (Tula and Izhevsk)may have done specific blocks of snipers that were built as such, from the start.

In my experience, my snipers are generally more accurate than my non-snipers. There are exceptions on both sides and, to be fair, I pay closer attention to the accuracy on the snipers, by tweaking things to improve them.

The repro guns can be made to shoot. Just start with the best condition bore that you can find on one. I would think that most of them could hold around 1.5 MOA with surplus ammo, so long as they're properly built and set up.

I love the smell of cosmoline in the morning.

    Well Joop,

Like everyone else here, beautiful rifles. My question is probably going to make you cringe but here goes. I have one mosin, it is nothing special, I bought it at a gun show for less than a $100, what I would like to do with it is put a Nightforce scope on it, work up a load for it and wring it out to see what it can do. I don't really care what it looks like. So the question is can I find a mount that will allow me to use a 30mm tube? Is there a drop in trigger that I can buy, because this one of course is terrible. I play the long range game and I'm ate up by it, so it makes me want to do this project for fun because it's outside of my knowledge base. Thanks for your help.

As Mallard posted, there are mounts and a/m triggers available. I'm not one to condone such things, but it can and has been done. My only request would be to verify what you have before going ahead with such a project. If you absolutely have to, please use something like a '43 Izhevsk, since there were several million of them made that year. But, really, you're not proving anything by doing such a project, but only diminishing the amount of historic military pieces by yet another.

THAT IS ONE REALLY NICE COLLECTION!

Mosins are definately addictive and underrated as far as Im concerned. If you pick wisely they will shoot and shoot cheaply. 440rnds for around $80 or $160 8880rnds and handloaded its def abit above a 308. With over 17million sold I know that there are some that need to be left as they are...BUT with the UK59 surplus heavy barrels that came in..i'm building a long range heavy barrel to play with__sorry...looking for a junker now to use for parts.

    I got a few
*The one that I should have never sold was bought by me about 15yrs ago--REAL Re-Arsenaled Russian PU in a green wooden single rifle crate, paperwork in Russian for the rifle, test target, and accessories!

One day I too want to have these EX-PU's put back together with Accumount set-ups!
    1943 IZZ Ex-PU w/tight barrel
1944 TULA Ex-PU super tight bore
    1942 TULA Ex-PU
    1942 TULA Repro PU
TWO UK59 heavy surplus barrels with two stripped receivers that time and are real close to headspace! need to torque them and recheck- worst casr scenerio .001 .002 off the botl face__________

___Im hooked on these things_again__in fact stopping at a place tomorrow to see what i can find...so perhaps I will have another one or two tomorrow.

TRY watching Tube vids by Mag30th___ He does about 4 vids with repros including one original PU. This guy pops steel out to 1K yes 1K with a 3.5 PU

Hey Guys, after looking at this thread , I went down to my local Big Five, which have them on sale; $ 119.00.

They only had one in the rack, but it looked in almost new condition ( Re-Blued / Re-Finished Stock ?), with lots of packing grease ..

Please let me know what you guys think .. I might drop by before the sale ends (12/31/2011) & pick one up ... ?

These would be the refurbished standard rifles. Although, it's not impossible to find an ex-sniper mixed in with them, if you know what to look for. If you're just looking for a shooter, try to find the one with the best bore. For collector value, it takes a little education before you can pick through them for the "best" ones.

With wholesale prices now in the $79-$89 for run of the mill, round receiver rifles, it's getting harder to find them for a hundred bucks or less in the commercial market. That's a good price, especially when you can lay your hands on them, first.

I'm going to take a drive down tomorrow afternoon, & look at what the " Turners/ Northridge " have in stock, compared to " Big Five " ( Refurbished/Re-finished ? ).

They will likely all be refurbs. I know that Big 5 gets theirs from importers such as Century, PW Arms and the like. Finding a non-refurbed 91/30 is not very common and especially not for $99.

Re: Introduction with Mosin Sniper Porn

I live about 30 minutes for Classicarms in North Carolina so I get a chance to look at what they have in person and I can tell you that the 91/30's that are coming into the country now are some of the nicest ones I have seen in several years. If your not a true purist you can bed the action, re-crown them and do the old Finn trick and shim the front of the barrel or open the handguard up for a floating barrel and see what shoots better...I had several that shoot extremely well for a relatively crude weapon.

Around here they can be had at gunshows for $100-$120 with te accessories.

I have seen several ex-snipers listed on an auction site also.
    >Rem700sa- trued, 6SuperX, Shilen unturned 6mm CM I turned to a modified Med-Heavy palma taper, H-S bottom steel- 3-10rnd mags and 1- 5rnd, Manners
    >Rem700sa- McMillan HTG woodland-sniper fiil, Hart #7 SS fluted, .308, M70 floorplate, 20moa NF base, IOR 3-18 with MP8 reticle.
