SVD NDM-86 (308) Shooting ½” groups.

I always wanted to have a SVD, but in the 308 version because I had heard that they were very accurate. I have seen postings about how great they shoot, but thought people were stretching the truth a little. LOL.

I came across one on Gun Broker a couple of months ago and broke down and pulled the trigger on it. I figured if it doesn’t shoot worth a $hit, I can always sell it and get my money back out of it since these in 308 are so rare.

I took it to the range a few weeks ago and shot the weapon with the supplied scope it comes with and its not the greatest in the world if your trying to accurately place a small shot grouping. I decided to throw a Zeiss 6x20x50AO on the weapon and ordered a “Centered” scope mount for it. The mount came in and it was approx ½’ over to far to the right on the weapon, not centered over the barrel, WTF! Plus the mount would not even slide on the rails because part of it was built to far to the right which would not let it slide.

So, I went in to my shop, removed the (4) screws, then went to the hardware store and bought SS screws approx ¼” longer and replaced them with these. I also bought (20) tiny thin washers which I placed around the four screws moving the top art of the mount back to center and allowing the mount to slide on the weapon now. I then used red loc tight for screws once they were the correct distance and tightened everything down, it worked like a dream. There’s nothing like going behind a manufactured product to “Fix” the companies mfg problems.

Well, I mounted the scope up, hand loaded some 308. I used some Federal Brass I had laying around, then used CCI #34 7.62 Primers, 44 gr of Varget and 168gr SMK’s. Off to the range I went to day.

WOW, I’m impressed, once I got the weapon sited in, this thing is a shooter! I’m VERY impressed with the shot groups for a semi auto and a AK variant which is different from the Kalashnikov design it’s based on the Dragunov design which is a short piston gas system instead of a long piston gas system on the AK’s. This gives the weapon a FAR better accurate outcome on shot placement.

I used a 3” target @ 100 yrds, once I got it settled in, the last two groups were five shot groups. These are to the right on the target. The lower group is pretty impressive. The one above it, I had a flyer. Not bad, and I’m happy with the way the weapon preformed, I’ll never doubt anyone claiming the accuracy of SVD in 308 again. It looks like this weapon is a keeper.

And I also I had to bring my baby to shoot also, my TRG. LOL

One of my teams did a mobile training team to a non-aligned East Asian country.

Their Army snipers had SVDs and their high-speed guys had HK PSG-1s.

The SVD guys finished higher because they were familiar and comfortable with their rifles and paid attention to the instruction.

When the guys taught them how to read trace they thought the Americans were pulling their legs -- but became immediate converts and believers.

    Nice.

Whenever I shoot my PSL I close my eyes and imagine it's an SVD.

wonder if the accuracy has anything to do with quality and the make. yours is Chinese. I see these Dragonov's go for a wide range in prices and it seems Romanian are cheapest and russian tigers very expensive. don't know but the results are a little surprising considering most AK's that I've handled are about 4 MOA guns IMHE.

I have a custom built PSL that I have only fired at 200 yard gongs so far. I have been looking for some 7N1 ammo but it is hard to find so I guess I am going to load my own. Yours looks very cool and the .308 is pretty rare.

Thanks guys, yeh I'm pretty happy with it. I too also have a Romanian PSL, which is not a SVD or Dragunov. They are more an AK than anything else. I see people and shops selling them on GunBroker stating they are SVD's or they state they are Dragunov's but they are not.

Romanian does make the PSL in 308 along with the standard 7.62x54R like most of the real SVD's. I always wanted to know how well they shoot compaired to the 54R version. Again I'll bet the 308 version will out shoot the 54R.

Here is a pic of my Custom PSL in 54R.

I think I'm going to break down and buy an IOR scope for the SVD now since I know it shoot's so well. Thanks everyone.

PSL is just an AK with a longer barrel chambered in 54R. They can occasionally shoot MOA. I love mine.

As for the 7N1 ammo, it might be good for you, it might not. I didn't find it to be any more accurate than russian light ball & it's certainly not match ammo, you can tell that just by looking at it.

Roger thanks for correction on the makes. We did some foreign weapons training with one of these and wound up with some small cuts and bruises on the range, lol. I think for those of us not familiar with the Dragunov or the 7.62x54mmR round (and didn't see those torpedos loaded in the mag) and thought it's just another AK -- found the recoil was a little surprising.

Like the M14, not sniper accurate - but very reliable and will get the job done, ? couple more rounds.

    Tai,
Is that an Ironwood stock on your PSL? Looks good. How does it shoot?

No, it's a Rhineland Arms stock. I bought the Tiger Maple stock for it. Then I staned it with MinWax. It came out pretty good. As far as the shooting of the PSL it shoots very good considering. By using the new stock it gave me an extra few inches for a better LOP.

I have owned both an ndm-86 in original x54r and a tiger (though as I recall the tiger looked more like a ak than proper svd). They are very nice guns and pretty accurate. Alas the tiger got sold and the ndm had a fire out of battery accident (it survived) and is now relegated to the safe.

That's it. Rhineland. It looks good. Thinking of getting one of them for my rear stock and making a custom front out of some
maple stock blanks I have here.

I have found both the PSL and SVD here in Iraq. The PSL seemed mutch more reliable then the SVD! We also had Tabooks (SP) sportarized AK's.
It's amazing some of the cool stuff you find out here!!!

    BTW, nice group!!

Correction - PSL is based not on AK but on RPK (heavier receiver, etc). And it can be a shooter (though I wouldn't expect it to outshoot M40A3 ).
