22LR Wolf Match Target vs. Match Extra?

Hey I was wondering what the differnces are between these two rounds as far as velocity and accuracy at 100yds. I have shot about 800 rounds of the match target but have never used the Match extra.

Also if you guys have any recommendations for your very favorite ammo for a cz452, throw em out there

thanks in advance!

I have noticed VERY little difference between the two as far as accuracy goes, both shoot very consistently with low SD. I stick with the match target due to cost, velocity is the same out of my rifle with the two, around 1020 fps @ 1200ft elevation.

Re: 22LR Wolf Match Target vs. Match Extra?

If you look at the bottom of this thread you will see some groupings I did with my 453 using Wolf and some other ammo. I'd really have to shoot some more groups and on a calm day to get the best result, but it will shoot pretty much any good ammo at about 1moa.

I was using my chrony, but only to get an idea. Most pretty much all of the match ammo was over 1000 and less then 1100 fps. I seem to recall that the Wolf had the lowest sd, but they all grouped. Mine liked the Wolf, Federal Gold match, and SK Jagd Subsonic HP and SK Jagd Pistol match pretty well.

Re: 22LR Wolf Match Target vs. Match Extra?

The Match Extra didn't shoot quite as well as the Match Target did through my tube. Only slightly larger groups and the ammount of drop between the two wasn't even noticable for me. Lot numbers will cause this to vary slightly but the two I tested weren't very different. I honestly didn't see much difference other than the Target shoots a bit better at 200 for me, so being 2 bucks less per box of 50 I figure the Match Target is the better way to go.

Re: 22LR Wolf Match Target vs. Match Extra?

Like Kirk and others have already said...I have never received significantly better accuracy from the Extra to justify the additional $2/box cost over the Match Target. That goes for results from 10/22 rifles, CZ rifles, and 40X rifles all in various configurations.

As for the velocity numbers...I don't have my chrono info in front of me, but I do not recall seeing any difference in velocities from the two different flavors.

Re: 22LR Wolf Match Target vs. Match Extra?

With my 10/22 with Kidd barrel, the Match Extra shoots an inch or two higher than the Match Target at 100 yards. Whether this is the result of differing velocity or just different ammo characteristics I can't tell you.

With all the shooting I've done so far, Match Extra hovers at and below 1 MOA for 10 shot groups at 100 yards and Match Target almost always has a flier or two in each 10 shot group that opens the group to 1.25-1.5 MOA. It's just not as consistent.

Target and extra shoot the same for me out of a Schultz and Larsen. Accuracy is OK and I have never chronographed it. For me Eli match pistol is lights out.

So it's the same process Eley uses in their Tenex, Match and Target lines. It's all the same stuff but what shoots best out of the most amount of rifles gets labeled as the better ammo.

Rumor is the SK match ammo is the same stuff as the Wolf match Extra ammo, but at a cheaper price. That stuff shoots like a house on fire through my KIDD rifle. Easy sub at 100.

This is correct, SK Jagd/Lapua runs a batch of ammo then accuracy tests it, the ammo that shoots the best gets put in the Wolf Match Extra and SK Jagd Rifle Match boxes, the rest gets boxed up as Wolf Match and SK Jagd Standard Plus. Lapua used to box the better shooting stuff and called it Club or Club Extra but I haven't seen any for quite a while.

I shoot the Match Extra through my Anschutz, I stopped shooting Match when I had several fliers out of one box of ammo.

Thats odd...... Wolf Match and SK Jagd Standard Plus shoot completely differently out of my two rifles. One love SK and one loves Wolf. Saw no reduction in group size when testing SK Match or Wolf Match Extra

I tested 7 different ammo for each rifle shooting 100 round of each ammo in each gun.

Visual inspection and velocity would lead one to believe they are Identical. my MK II TR the Wolf would group to minute of Pie Plate, and the SK Standard shoots close to MOA (5 shot groups). Glad I found the SK as I was about to give up on the rifle!!

Re: 22LR Wolf Match Target vs. Match Extra?

I have a CZ 452 Varmint.

I did an unscientific test of 8 different types of 22 LR ammo.

Wolf Target Match
Wolf Target Extra
Federal Premium
Federal Gold Medal
Remington Match
American Eagle
RWS Rifle Match
SK Rifle Match

My test was two 5 shot groups @ 50 and 100 yards with each type of ammo.

The SK and the Wolf Target Match shot identical groups @ 50 and 100 yards. There was a 1/2 MOA shift in POI between the two, but they both performed extremely well.

If the shop I bought the ammo from still has some Wolf from the lot I purchased from, I'll probably buy most/all of it.

I was surprised with the RWS and the Fed GM. I could've had better groups throwing the rounds at the target!

I'll upload some pictures tonight or this weekend.

Id be interested in seein those pics!

One thing Ive noticed when shooting different rounds is you need to give them some time to lube the barrel to become most accurate. When I switch straight from something with a waxy coating to say wolf target which is more like a grease on the round, the first several rounds are all over. But then they settle in and shoot great.

I noticed on 308 Federal Gold metal match it says "Match" but on the 22LR is just says federal gold metal. Anybody know why it doesnt say "match" ?

a bunch of stuff on the wolf ammo in these threads:
22 ammo threads

included in there are three posts i did using the wolf stuff compared to others in a savage MKII, 50 + 100 yards taking group size, price, clean barrel, dirty barrel, and other factors into account:
22 ammo thru a mkII part 1 50 yards
22 ammo thru a mkII part 2 100 yards
22 ammo thru mkII part 3 multi yard

i was so confused about the different types of ammo that sound the same that i made one up. i changed that last post to reflect the correct names (and varieties) of Fed GM 22 LR.

the gold medal Target is their bottom tier 22 match ammunition.

Re: 22LR Wolf Match Target vs. Match Extra?

back to the wolf extra / match target, i got the same information as many:

ammo lots are tested at the factory (Lapua), the most consistant lots go into the extra, the "lesser" consistant ones go into the match target. SK made at the same plant, many say they are the same SK rifle match = wolf match extra, SK standard plus = Wolf match target.

i actually think they grade them four ways as the ammo shot side by side through a savage mkii had different results in FPS, group size, fliers, drop, and the occasional FTF.

my "working theory" is:

the best stuff goes into wolf extra, the 2nd best stuff goes into SK standard plus, the 3rd best stuff goes into Wolf match target, the forth goes into SK rifle match. it's just my theory, but all four have proved in my setup to have different FPS, group sizes, and different POI (slightly). looking at it economically, i don't see why a manufacturer would pay to have 4 different types of packaging, advertising, etc. unless there actually were 4 different grades of their ammo.

out of a 5 or even a 10 shot group, i'd get a more consistant group with the wolf extra and sk standard plus. the cheaper wolf target and sk rifle match would (for whatever reason) have a smaller "primary" group for me, but a flier or two would open that "primary" group up slightly. additionally, shot through a chronograph, those 1 or 2 fliers where noticable - changing the average FPS and deviation. in reference to the OP, on the calculator it would appear that there is a difference in the FPS between them, at least in part to that deviation. through my setup there was also a difference in drop from 50 to 100 (at the time had my rifle zeroed at 25yards), the wolf extra dropped 10.75", the wolf target 11.5".

at the end of the day, i think all 4 of those ammos provide really good results through a large cross section of rifles, and some actually get better results with the cheaper wolf target and sk rifle match. IMO any of the 4 is a really good benchmark to test other ammos against as they all perform well enough to gain a benchmark status, especially for the price.

From my studies, the RWS ammo's need more fouling than conventionally needed for most types of 22lr ammo. The person who comes to mind first is Carter Mayfield as he switched from Eley to try RWS R50 and he needs 25 rounds to properly season his barrel and he obtains excellent accuracy at longer distances with this setup, but at closer distances (specifically 50 yrds) his groups weren't up to his personal capabilities. My thoughts are that different ammo may require a certain distance to stabilize in flight (similar to some centerfire) and thus may perform poorly at short distances. So testing at variable ranges with large sample groups (i.e. more than 20 shots, somewhere in the realm of 100-200 seems more reasonable), and in perfect conditions would be ideal and respectable. If Carter wouldn't have given this ammo a chance after seeing his groups at 50 then he may have never discovered its capabilities at 100 and beyond. More testing may lead you to more correct results, not that yours are incorrect, but you may have made an error somewhere and not known it just from small scale testing.

Re: 22LR Wolf Match Target vs. Match Extra?

Top predator, thanks for the good info! What you guys are all telling me is exactly what I wanted to hear. I am comfertable knowing im not wasitng my time with match target comapaired to some of the others. I brought this thread up because I had been getting really nice groups with the match target, but getting some fliers that I KNOW werent me, and have been having a bit of bad luck with it lately - probably due to my cleaning process. Now I can focus on having my bbl properly prepped and less about which ammo it likes.

terror, I have definately noticed a difference when rounds have a chance to "season" the bbl as you said.

Re: 22LR Wolf Match Target vs. Match Extra?

For my limited shooting with a Browning 52 (Winchester 52C sporter clone)and my Hammerli 208 the Wolf Match Extra shoots the best for the money. Tried most of the high dollar ammo but the Wolf is the best bang for the buck. The Browning 52 will keep 10 shots inside a dime @ 50yds and that is plenty good for me, as it is my yard pest control gun.

Re: 22LR Wolf Match Target vs. Match Extra?

My Win 52C target and sporter cannot tell the difference in MT or ME so I do not spend the extra $$ on match extra. very good middle of the road ammo tested at 50 and 100 yards. another observation on wolf MT it does not give up much to the super high dollar stuff, Lapua X acta, Eley 10X. Head and shoulders above all in my winchesters is the 90's dimpled Federal Gold Metal Ultra Match UM1 , best .22 stuff I ever fired PERIOD..

The Extra seems to make my pockets feel lighter. Otherwise, it does shoot just a little better in my tests, but noe enough to justify the extra $.

My CZ 452 Varmint didn't seem to do well for me with Wolf. I shoot 50 yards in comp with the benchrest guys, and have settled on RWS Rifle Match. They one hole group for me off a bipod and rear bag. There do seem to be some fliers here and there though.

Re: 22LR Wolf Match Target vs. Match Extra?

match extra shoots more consistently for me (less fliers).
Those who would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety.

Where are the best places to buy 22 wolf match ammo? I don't think I ever seen them on the usual bulk ammo places I shop at.

My CZ Ultra Lux, Sako Finnfire, and Russian rifles don't care. My bud's Sako Range likes the Extra better. I'd think it is more of a lot number deal than anything.

I shoot Target only.

Re: 22LR Wolf Match Target vs. Match Extra?

Out of the 10 quality Anschutz match rifles at our benchrest club nobody can win a match with the stuff you are shooting although it shoots pretty good for moderately priced ammo but the Match Extra holds on average half the group size and better.
Depending on your shooting discipline (position vs. benchrest) skill level, rifle handling and bench set-up and most importantly the rifle's accuracy potential you may or may not benefit from it.
The Match Extra is actually relabeled Lapua Rifle Match which is the best sub $7./box ammo available for most folks and once you get much past 50 yards is hard to distinguish from $18. Eley Red Box. The speed runs around 1056. I see good shooters holding an inch with it all day in the wind at 100 yards and often a competitor will stack most all of them in one ragged hole at 100 yards.

With our 1' diameter X ring it takes over 45 X's (out of 60 shots) to place and we have shooters that can regularly stack in over 50 with a club record of 56 that was shot with unweighed Lapua Rifle Match where most other shooters were using Eley costing 2x to 3x the price.
