Scope for CZ 527 Varmint in .223

Hi all,

Well I thought I had a scope all picked out for this rifle until I found out that I will not be able to fit a 50mm front objective using medium rings. I was looking at the Night Force NXS 3.5-15 X 50 with MOAR reticle. I am afraid if I go higher on the rings, I will lose my cheek weld.

This rifle can be a PITA to scope as it uses a rather different size dovetail on it's scope bases which come pre-attached to the rifle. Also, the stock bolt handle will hit the scope if you do not use high rings (which I was trying to avoid). I bought a re-contoured bolt handle specifically to use medium rings.

I will use rifle for paper punching up to 300 yards and possible coyote hunting down the road.

So here are my criteria for the scope:

1) 30mm tube
2) No larger than 44mm front objective
3) Target style turrets with 1/4 MOA click adjustments
4) SFP
5) MOA reticle with hold overs similar to MOAR.
6) Magnification starting at 2.5X up to 14.5X. I realize I
will need to be flexible, but I was hoping for more than
10X on the top end.
7) Illuminated reticle
8) Budget up to $1,500.

I'd appreciate any advice. I am not interested in lower end optics.

Thanks.

Chris

The other thing you gotta watch on CZ rifles is the short assed bolt handle, they will foul the ocular if mounted too low.

The bolt handle issue has already been addressed! As stated in my original post, I already bought a re-contourded bolt handle from Custom Relading Tool Company!

Well here is what I run:

Vortex Viper 6-20x44 it has your 30mm tube and so far has tracked extremely well. It sits in medium rings without the james calhoon bolt knob. It has plenty of clearance of the ocular bell and has been flawless on the rifle since day one. The scope is generally ran from its 100 yard zero all the way out to 600 yards and is used for paper, coyotes, prairie dogs, and most anything else within its capabilities. Now, this scope is currently going to be replaced with a Vortex PST line scope, just unsure of which.

If you prefer, you can order a picatiny railed scope base for your rifle from CZ-USA.com I have not used theirs, but I will more than likely run it when I upgrade my scope.

Hope this helps, just let me know if you have any other questions.

L1 - 14.4"
L2 - 2.8"
L3 - 2.2"
L4 - 6.4"
L5 - 4.7"
L6 - 3.2"

H1 - 2.03"
H2 - 1.72"

These would be the extremes for any scope on "medium" rings. The ocular piece really cannot be much larger than this without "high" rings. Now if you pick up CZ's rail adapter then that might help things, I am not sure. But it is worth a try cause then you can use standard rings from all manufactures.

I recently faced the same dilemma, with the same gun. I decided on a mark AR Mod1 P5 Firedot TMR in 309. It should be on my porch tomorrow.

Hi,

I did some more research and found the Leica ER in 3.5-14X42. It can be had with target turrets (.25 moa) and a balistic reticle (not nearly as nice as the Nightforce MOAR). There are some other reticle choices also available. The scope is not available with an illuminated reticle. So far this comes closest to my criteria.

Does anyone have any expereince with this scope?

For hunting, i'd take a Leica over an NF any day. But they a both built for different purposes. Have you looked at Swarovski at all?

I use the DIP 25 MOA taper base,Burris XTR Medium rings and the 4.5-14 LR/T M1 30mm tube 40mm lens,it shoots lights out and tracks to 700 with ease, and actually has the adjustments to zero past 1,000.

and 4 inch groups at 600 are pretty common in good conditions.

Nice looking rifles gentlemen!

Mr. Big, I assume that scope is the Leupold target version. Can you pease send me a picture of the scope turrets with the caps off?

I am sort of hung up on getting a scope that does NOT have capped turrets.

Mr. Big,

Never even thought of going to the Leupold Custom Shop. I wonder if they could also add an illuminated reticle?

The DIP 20MOA base is about $40.00 and a set of Burris Extreme, 30mm, med mounts is about $50.00. I have been using the same scope as JCountz for about a year and a half on a 527 with that base ring combo.

The scope does not exactly meet you spec.s but has made a killer varmint rig. The scope has dialed perfectly reducing the need for a reticle with holdovers. These scopes have gone on sale at Cameraland a couple of times in the past two years and are an incredible value.

JCountz, you don't specify what make the rings are, and Warne and Talley both make vertical split CZ rings. Checking to see which ones you have there?

Good catch, I have Warne rings which have done their job well. If I remember right I went with the lowest "measured" medium rings I could find. I am not 100% on that as it was a little over a year ago when I purchased them. Clearance with the bolt is fine right now. I want to try some BC flip up caps as I am unsure whether or not the bolt will clear them.

I mostly agree as that is how my math adds up as well. It could be that "new math" but ...
For 1" rings:
The CZ rings list at .555
The Talley list at .525
The Leupolds list at .500
The Burris list at .500
The Warnes list at .425
The Calhoon Hunker mounts he says "are .125 lower than factory" .555 - .125 = .430
The Millet Mangle-Locs advertise to be .395

Again this is all for 1", not 30mm, your choices are much less. The Millets do advertise as being lowest, but then you'd have to dork with the Mangle-Loc's. I see a set of Warne rings in my future I believe.
