    .338 LM Anyone tried RL-33?

Interested in trying RL-33 in my .338 Lapua (if I can find any). I have tried retumbo and H-1000 thus far with H-1000 prevailing. I heard RL-33 was suppose to get higher velocities but have not seen this powder for sale anywhere and have not seen much information or theads online where people have been using it or any results. Has anyone run this through their lapua yet? I am running 300 grain SMK's currently out of a Savage 110 with 92.0 grains of H-1000 and have been getting 2,785-2,802 FPS with this combo. Have shot it out thus far to 400 yards (Max Range at Shooting Range) with 0.50 MOA results.

    Thanks,

    Brandon

I just loaded some up last night. I will not get to the range until Wed night, so I will let you know how it does. I started below there 97.5 grains for the SMK 300 and went with 93.

I gave up on all RL powders. Only Shoot the Extreme line from Hodgdon now. All the RL powders I tried, especially RL17 had huge temp swings.

That might be okay in some areas, but here in WY, we can shoot from the upper 90's to the -20's. I will not have summer and winter loads and with the Hodgdon powders, I can run the same load year around.

H1000 is what I run in the 338LM, not broke.. don't fix it kind of thing.

    results with H1000.... click here >>> GAP 338LM and 285 Hornady's

I also run the H1000 with fantastic results. I only went to it because I found it and could not find the H1000. As far as temp swings I will not have to deal with that being this far south, but its good information to know.

I use WC-872 in my .338-378 Weatherby. It's a very accurate combination with the 300 grain Sierra Matchking. Commercial powders are just getting too damn expensive. Especially at over 100 grains a shot.

I have had the best luck with RL-25. 90gr under a 330gr SMK.

I'm buying a GAP .338 LM from a fellow Hide member, and he said the rifle likes RL-25 with 300 gr SMK's. I've gone through the .338/50BMG in the other reloading board, and I don't remember seeing anyone talking about using RL-25. I'm in Texas, so temp swings while shooting will go from hot to hotter to hot wet blanket steamy when shooting, so should I be concerned about the effects on the RL powder? The guy I'm buying it from is in KS, so he is shooting in a completley different environment. As of yesterday 3rd Generation had some H1000 I think. It sounds like robp5t likes it, and he's probably in a similar environment to me being in FL.

Well I got to do a little shooting this afternoon. I have to say I am very happy with R33. I shot 20 rounds of 338 with the last 5 using the R33.
The load was 93 grains R33
    Fed 215m primer
lapua brass with 7 reloads on them
I used the length I always load too because it works in my gun 3.674
    2609 was my low
    2621 was my high
I got a nice pattern until I pulled the last shot which is the low one.

I like the H1000 have never had any problems with at all. I would think our climate would be very similar. I also have had great luck with 4831sc as well.

Good shooting, I am also good at pulling the last shot
4 months later, did you kept on shooting with the RL33 and what are your final thoughts on it with a 300gr bullet?
    I have a Sako TRG 42 .338LM, barrel 27 1/8, 1-10 twist, also looking for alternate powders.
    Thanks.

I have been using RL-50 under 300 Berger OTM's. I have shot at 40 degrees and 85 degrees, without major differences in performance. I keep the ammo in the shade, and allow the barrel to cool between shots/groups of 5 shots. I have done this both ways, and don't see major differences in performance. Been getting 1/3 MOA @ 300yds with consistency.

I do want to get some RL-33 to try it, but QL is actually showing me better performance with RL-50 in my 34" barrel.
    Cheers,
    Tim
