I'm very skeptical. I did the hot rod 6.5 some time ago. (264WM) 600 rnds it was done. That said, I am quite intrigued with this 6.5 SAUM and seeing for myself if it lives up to claims posted here. Anyone care to give me neck and FB dimensions, I'll get a reamer ordered today....

Will an 8 twist work for the 130's and 140's? I see most are running a 1:8.7....I have a spare Bartlein lying around that's a 1:8, and this caliber is very intriguing!

    Fingers crossed...

I've got an 8 twist on mine. (I've got an 8.5 twist on the way as well). Works great w the 140's. haven't shot any 130's yet though. Finally got the stock I ordered for it yesterday. Had to rob one off one of my 6.5x47 L's to get started with the shooting. Here's a pic of the rifle and a sample of a group. I think it will get a tad better by tweaking the seating depth a bit

Yes, please post reamer specs. I have a 700 LA begging for a new bbl. As for as the brass is concerned, you are just taking 7mm SAUM brass, running through 6.5MM SAUM die, and trimming to length? What is the neck dimension of the loaded ammunition? Thanks! krw

10 shot Target with H1000 and 140 Amaxes @ 3140 FPS. Found good seating depth and load.

the Magnetospeed V1 is one slick unit !

Lovin' that chrono! Will the strap that goes around the barrel fit an MTU profile with a 2" brake?

20 fps extreme spread for 10 shots - NICE!

As a 6.5 guy, I might have to get one of these...

    @jonthomps I haven't had a chance to chrono yet. It's a 24in barrel finished at 26 with break.

Ive been away from this Thread, LOL. But it just helped me make up my mind. Im going to shoot the 6.5 SAUM with 3600+ rounds on it at the Cup. its a little slower than when new but still hammers. With the practice and the match it will put it over 4000. Its been shot hard, there are at least 15-20 people here on the hide that have seen me shoot this rifle at Matches and at Pats Icebreaker. It has never been babied, shot lots of rapid 10-15 shot strings and has always either shot 140's at 3100 or 130's at 3250 with H1000 and a little retumbo at first. Its had one setback but not a full setback just 2 turns .122" and chamber bump that was at 2200 rounds and was mainly because I had the barrel off for a new brake and decided to go ahead and do it since it was off and seemed like a good Idea.

Setback is like a Tuneup its $150 and takes a week or so so I hardly think its a big deal if guys need a setback to get 4000. it would be worth it.

130 JLK's shot pretty well....8 shots fired fast. The barrel was pretty hot and it still put them right in there.

Sounds proven to me from what George, Josh, Pat, and others have said and posted their results. I wish there was factory brass but it doesn't sound entirely too excruciating to form the brass.

Mine is built! Now I have to get some ammo! I have 50 rounds on order from Copper Creek with the 140 Berger Hybrids...Their "house blend" for the Gap offering. My dies have been on order since March 23rd from Midway and are not expected to ship until June 3rd. I have Brass, bullets, primers, and powder....just waiting on the dies!

Gotta shoot some Cerakote at it, but it is already looking mean! I will post up some range results once I get to take her for a spin!

    Cool

Built mine on a long action so I can load'em long. Also going to try some of the solids that Advanced Precision Technology is putting out. They are about .250" longer than the 139 G Scenars, (140 grain HPBT) but it is just the nose that is longer and do not require a custom chamber to run, just with most short actions they have to be single fed, I am running a long action with the 338 mags, so that shouldn't be an issue!

I was too at first, after seeing a lot of 6.5x284's go south at 900 and a couple 6.5 WSM's go south at 500-600 I started thinking. Powder Burning does not cause the heat that destroys barrels its the Pressure. The Pressure causes the extreme heat that's necessary to burn and heatcheck the barrel. Kinda like how they make carbon turn to diamond's Pressure.

Anyway the 6.5 Saum case is near perfect because it allows you to throw a 6.5 140gr at 3100 at about 53,000 PSI with H1000. Other cases have too much capacity or not enough. The Saum case was picked not because its magical , because it is the perfect fit. In a perfect world I would take the the RCM case and shorten it a tad and give it a longer neck. That would truly be perfect!!!!

At any rate the 6.5 Saum is working as we thought it would. Here is a thought to those that are still having problems understanding it. Shoot next to a 6mm REM, 243 ETC, any caliber that has a 63,000-68,000 PSI SAMI pressure. as soon as the rifle is fired eject the case into you hands. Those of you that have had a 223 brass land on you or go down your shirt know what will happen, it will burn the crap out of you. The 6.5 Saum with the load im talking about with come out only very warm and you can grasp it tightly with your hand without getting burned. Keeping chamber pressures low not only keeps your barrel from puking early its also easy on your rifle and the components , IE Brass lasts a long time!!

Yes if you hot rod this caliber IE a load of 60.5 grains 4831 SC and the 130VLD at 3400fps you will be pushing 68,000 PSI and toast the barrel in 600-800 rounds.

But the same goes to the guys trying to take the 260 Rem and shoot the 140's at 3000 they are at or near 68,000 PSI and will also toast their barrels early.

    Just some Afternoon Info.

Confirming POI for a range card at 200 yards. These loads are producing 3250fps.

Two impacts on this rock at 825 meters. The 2nd strike rolled it down the hill and out of view, or I would have kept reducing it to gravel. This was the 130gr JLK load at 3250fps. If you look right below the cactus, you'll see the base of the expanded bullet.

Im averaging 3250 with 130gr Berger VLD's, pointed. They are the go to bullet (for me) if I want speed or to hunt at longer ranges.
I have taken one groundhog with the 140 Hybrid, there wasnt much left for a picture and it was an improvised shot out of a UTV. I'll go with target of opportunity....
This is probably my favorite caliber to shoot. I have always been attached to 260 and 6mm Creedmoor but this SAUM is just to much fun and they are very easy to shoot.

Hey KYS, can you post some pics of your 6.5 SAUM(s)? You said you had one in more of a tactical set-up correct? Mind sharing some pics?

George just won the snipers hide cup with the 6.5 saum. And he has to be approaching 4k rounds on his barrel. Good shooting George!

Bbcellars- I will get some pics up of my rigs.

This is my 6.5 SAUM on a Badger M2008 WSM action. It has a 27" Bartlein Barrel with Elite Iron Sierra SD suppressor and reflex style muzzle brake. The can cover makes it look massive but its actually smaller then that.
This combo makes for a hell of a long range cannon. I have had no problems taking it out to 1700 yards at RCSC. The felt recoil is minimal at best, the weight of the gun with the 338LM suppressor just cancels it out. I have set this gun up on a 600 yard target with only a rear bag and fired it with me sitting next to it and hitting steel. All of my GAP built rifles shoot amazing but this one is just different. It loves both 140 and 130gr Berger bullets. I run both loads depending what I am doing.

If there are questions ask away. I will post pictures of the others.... this is one of my favorite calibers to shoot!

Wow, this thread is unhealthy. My 7WSM build was looking so pretty, too.

Might have to trade my 7mm Broughton #3 for a 6.5 #3 of some sort....grin

Will this cartridge work in any short action?

What reticle are you running in that S&B. and what do you think about that 2008 action. Is it that's much better than others or what.

I love #10. I have taken it to 1200 and it shoots great. 130 vld's with almost no recoil like a laser. My rifle with a 3x24 March is 9.2# including the sling.

I love the action. If you are looking for a short bolt throw, tough as nails action this is the one for you. I have had a few now and they are all very accurate rifles. I think a lot of their success in their over built style. They are the tank of all custom actions.

I should have a BAT Tactical action in my hands pretty soon. I wonder if I should opt for the 6.5 SAUM instead of the .260. Hmmm.

Thanks for the info. My S&B H2 should be here this week. I run a defiance action right now and love it. I was thinking maybe I could build the 6.5 SAUM on a badger and haven't seen one yet so this post made up my mind on that one. Keep the posts and pics coming.

You wont be able to with the standard face bolt. You will need a WSM bolt face.

However, if you have a Bighorn action you can just ask AJ to send you a WSM bolt face be done with it I think this thread has just put the nail in the coffin regarding my upcoming build. Only drawback is brass, but I think that will sort itself out as time goes on. I'm thinking medium Palma contour in one of Tom's 90% carbon fiber stocks and we'll have ourselves a "do it all rifle".

I know as impressed as I am with my Extreme Hunter, I am thinking a comp weight rifle is gonna be the next build or a switch barrel !

The 6.5 did Its Job. I will pull the Barrel with just over 4000 rounds about 4034 or so give or take about 10, I kept pretty good count. I will keep this barrel for training as it still shoots great. just lost alot of velocity. Hopefully the Nay-Sayers will have the proof they wanted.

Again if you juice it up it will go fast. but if you keep to the recomended presures it will do exactly what it was designed to do.
