    6.5 Creedmoor vs 7mm-08

I'm looking at having another rifle built for targets/steel, and I am considering a 6.5 Creedmoor. I currently have a couple of heavy .308s, and I know the ballistics of the 6.5 trump just about anything out of the Winchester. I also have a built 7mm-08, so I am curious as to how these two cartridges compare. My 7mm-08 wears a 1/9 22" Bartlein barrel, so I am curious if a 24-26" Creedmoor will offer any advantage.

    Specifically, how do the two compare regarding the following;
    -Barrel life
    -Brass availability, quality of brass
    -Factory match ammo
    -500+ yard ballistics
    -Recoil
    -162gr AMAX (7mm-08) vs 140gr AMAX (6.5)

I'm sure this has been covered before, but my search hasn't turned up the kind of information I am after. Thanks!

    Re: 6.5 Creedmoor vs 7mm-08

I was just researching this same question today. And using the data on hormadys website I personally gave the edge to the 08 for general purpose so it is what I plan on going with for my next build.

    -Barrel life=
    dont know
    -Brass availability, quality of brass=
7mm-08 is easy to find, creedmoor brass at this time is only made by hornady unless you want to make your own
    -Factory match ammo=
I think Corbon may make a "match" load for the 7mm-08 with the 168 berger vld, Hornady makes a couple for the creedmoor and a couple hunting loads as well.
    -500+ yard ballistics=
You are going to be spilting hairs here and alot depends on how fast you run the load, it can easly go either way.
    -Recoil
    -162gr AMAX (7mm-08) vs 140gr AMAX (6.5)=
The creedmoor lauches a lighter bullet using less powder so there for it will have less recoil.

Is there anyone who make match ammo for the 7-98?

    Re: 6.5 Creedmoor vs 7mm-08

Generally speaking 7-08 gets the nod for barrel life if that's any concern,3500-5000??? A little more energy on target with 162's-168's, slightly more recoil.

If I were considering factory ammo only it's a no contest for the 6.5 Creed vs 7-08.

Guessing at around 3000 for barrel life for the 6.5C. Pretty mild recoil, flatter trajectory.

In your case I'd say to keep the 7-08 and buy some reloading gear or ask a "non dipshit" friend to load for you for a small fee.

Can we say illegal. Now if the non dipshit friend does it for free then all is well.

Is it illegal to load for someone else? Sorry for the dumb question but I have never heard that before.

You need a manufacturing license to sell reloaded ammo.

You have to have a manufacturer's license from the ATF if you receive payment for ammo you've loaded.

    Re: 6.5 Creedmoor vs 7mm-08

    -Barrel life: 7mm-08 > 6.5 creedmoor

-Brass availability: 7mm-08 > 6.5 Creedmor; quality is up for debate depending on what manufacturer you pick.

-Factory match ammo: Hornady for 6.5 Creedmoor. Corbon for 168gr VLD.

-500+ yard ballistics: depends on how fast you push them

    -Recoil: 6.5 creedmoor < 7mm-08

    -162gr AMAX (7mm)BC G1 0.625 vs. 140gr AMAX (6.5) BC 0.550

    --------

The main advantage of 6.5 Creedmoor over 7mm-08 will be less recoil.

Why not make the comparison a little more even with berger VLDs rather than having the BC little offset? Or is he only wanting to shoot amax?

If you look at the average of BC's in general for all rounds I believe the 7mm comes out ahead.

Sure it does but the 7mm 180gr VLD in the 7mm-08 you'll be sacrificing a great deal of velocity, which wont be comparable to the 6.5 CM running 140gr VLD @ 2800fps. As i listed the 168gr VLD vs the 140gr VLD is a better comparison. As the 168gr VLD can be launched at decent speeds. But i think the speed advantage on average of the 6.5Cm with the 140gr VLD edges out the barely higher BC of the 7mm 168gr VLD.

One thing I have learned that makes the 6.5 somewhat "better" is the fact you can load a bullet to a longer COAL and still be within the confines of a typical box mag. I know 162s can get very long in my 7mm-08, and it doesn't take much to keep them from fitting in a 700 internal box mag.

At like bbl lengths and pressures, you wont see much of any difference in velocity. IMO, the difference between similar capacity cased 6.5 and 7mm chamberings is nill, and is more of a matter of personal preferance.

Thats the only thing i'm wondering, i'm not sure what a 7mm-08 runs 168gr projectiles around? Where i know the 6.5Cm will run the 140gr around 2800fps with a 24-26" bbl.

I've mentioned it in other threads but i'm not exactly a huge 7mm-08 fan. I don't mind it but if i'm going to go 7mm rout i'm going to use a .284 or a 7 WSM. Thats just me though.

FWIW, in my 708, I run the 162AMAX slighty over 2700 FPS via 22" tube.

Thats not bad. And like you said the difference between the two is pretty negligible. All the loads i kept looking up for the 7mm-08 had the 160gr class bullets moving at around 2500-2600 at most which is why i was skeptical

    Re: 6.5 Creedmoor vs 7mm-08

I get 2700fps with a 162amax in my 18" 7-08. I have throated it way out and run a mag with no front plate, but I still get great speed.

I am also only spending $.25 per round where the Berger is almost double that cost. Sure you can compare Berger to Berger, but one of the best things about the 7 is that there are so many cheap bullets with great BC.

I haven't seen Brian litz's numbers for the 162gr Amax but if the G1 is correct it's higher than the berger VLD. IMO i was making comparison a little more fair for the 6.5Cm.

I am trying to decide between the 6.5 Creedmoor and a 7mm 08. The rifle will be used mostly for targets out to 1000m and varmints. How stout would recoil be on a heavy bbl 7mm 08 with a 162gr Amax? I am guessing it would be comparable to a .308.
    Thanks

What about bbl life. Will the 7mm last longer than the 6.5 creedmoor? What if I was trying to hot rod a 7mm 08, would it out last the 6.5? how does this work?
    Thanks

Can we say illegal. Now if the non dipshit friend does it for free then all is well.
Only illegal if the guy reloading charges for the services offered.

Not sure if you can hotrod the 7mm safely enough to degrade barrel life that bad. The two use relatively close powder charges yet the 6.5 is more of an over bore so it will obviously be worse.
