Re: THE OFFICIAL M40A1 PICTURE THREAD

Damn Mike gettin tired of your common sense!!!!! As Mike stated many of us don't even have close to the funds for a true clone. My idea is unless it was purchased from USMC as a complete rifle it is NOT a true M40A1, PERIOD! If reciever isn't actual serial numbered part purchased by our finest then it isn't a clone, perhaps a somewhat 'replica'. Don't care if you clip slot it, stamp US on it or what it is still NOT. So especially if on a USMC return stock and a Remington reciever it is interesting to myself. A 6 digit # isn't going to make it shoot better. If it has a Shilen/Rock/Broughton/Lilja barrel because that was your preference or what you could afford so be it,how many other than a die hard M40A1 buff will ever know. So I would like to see them irregardless of what type scope although period glass is cooler(ie, T10's, Redfield's, B&L Elite 4000's, etc). Barrel brand don't matter to me, as trigger type, clip slotting, etc.

So if it quakes like a duck, walks like a duck, sounds like a duck, it might not be a "Mallard" duck but it is for all intent and purposes a duck. So perhaps we need a "this is all I can afford M40A1" thread. Ya, know something for us peasants whom are financially embarrassed or challenged!!!

Re: THE OFFICIAL M40A1 PICTURE THREAD

Alright Dave, SD, and littlebarney. I hope others follow suite and post theirs too, as I'm sure many saw the negative post about non clones.

New boxed receiver, Rock fluted 5R barrel(to save a little weight out front because of neck and back troubles). All done to M40A1 specs as far as length and contour. #7, 24" from front of recoil lug.
TPS rings and 20 degree base also.

Terry Cross bolt knob conversion. And all built/trued by Randy of R&D Precision. Randy did the paint too. Coyote brown for the metal and the base of the stock.
The reddish brown is a regional thing as we have so much iron in the soil. There's iron oxide colored rocks all over this area.
Randy gave the stock a base coat of "stock coat" before the colors, which covered plenty of glitches, holes, deep scrapes, etc, that were in the original stock. Randy said it was the worst return stock he'd seen, yet he brought it back to almost new condition.

Photos of completed rifle is pool porn by Randy, the smear camo stock was mine.

If you had handled the original stock, before this, you wouldn't believe it's the same rifle.
The original pad came apart when I tried to unscrew it and there was a lot of fuzzing of the stock at the rear too, so I cut 1"+ the original pad length, and added a limbsaver recoil pad. Again for the neck/back.

Just after stripping^^. Dick Davis said it was the earliest stock he'd seen at that point when I sent him some pics. Made by Gale McMillan in his garage behind the house in 75. This old stock has seen a lot of use.

It says just return stocks are also welcome, so here goes. Anyone have an idea if these are early or late stocks? In the future, I hope to send one to Randy for a build.

Thanks Phylodog and Brad! LOBO, the top one looks like what some are calling a "semi smear". It's between the original smear patterns and the woodland pattern!?!?!?

The bottom one is a smear pattern. Both are nice looking stocks.

Edited to add; The bottom stock would be the oldest, but what year I have no idea(Guessing sometime between 75-77?). Dick Davis probably would. Send him a PM(he's a member here) with both stocks. He'll get back to you with info.

The so called semi smear............I have no idea of the dates of production. Before the woodland is about as close as I can get, and I don't know when they started those to be honest.

    Good luck in your quest!

Re: THE OFFICIAL M40A1 PICTURE THREAD

Can some of you guys with the exact GAP builds send me some high rez photos of the markings. I'm getting some conflicting info regarding barrel stamps. Any of the markings would be appreciated. You don't need to pull the action out of the stock, but if you want to PLEASE TAKE PICS. I'm trying to get as much info for the M40a1 build thread under "Rifles". Thanks.

Re: THE OFFICIAL M40A1 PICTURE THREAD

Here's one I've been working on while the other one is at GAP.

I'm after a late 1970's look, after the McMillan stock and before the Unertl. The scope as I understand would have been a Redfield Accu-Range with either the old style Redfield Jr base and 4 screw rings or the newer single underscrew rings.

    Dave that looks excellent!

ETA: After looking at that USMC picture I think I need a cigarette.

Anyone notice that the first A3 has George's bolt release mod while the A3 with the S&B doesn't?

Dave did you do anything to your stock to polish it? The clear coat looks very deep and shiny in the pics, beautiful rifle!

    Phylodog

I wiped the stock down with Tru-Oil.

    Parga

On page 270 of "The One-Round War" (Peter R. Senich) there's a picture of a reportedly official USMC March 1977 M40A1, I went for that look.

I'll have to find it and scan it, Guns&Ammo 1979 Annual had an article on USMC Snipers and detailed their rifles a bit. M40A1s but with Redfields...Unertls hadn't arrived yet.

Re: THE OFFICIAL M40A1 PICTURE THREAD

Here's another pic of mine, gratuitously added after Ray (Parga) PM'd me that there's a picture of this stock (#1541) in DFA#1 (which of course I just had to order...). I also emailed IBA (not knowing the context of the picture in DFA) to see if they recalled any info on it.

    Rem700 (nothing special) action
    Shilen #8 22" tube (308 of course)
USMC stock #1541 w/matching metal (thanks Goerge at GAP!!!)
    Leupy 10X M3 (older-CW covered turrets)
    TPS Rings/IOR base.

littlebarney---We will have something to compare then when yours is done!! Im planning the same thing till I can afford a USO to throw on there...Though my accurange isnt EXACTLY correct....its a 6-18X and black....with time correct rings and second gen base....the only thing Im missing are the screws for the base....found out that the rear screw needs to be alot longer than the extra ones that I had laying around from a cheap lupy base...the others are ok, just the rear one needs to be longer....

Re: THE OFFICIAL M40A1 PICTURE THREAD

along those lines here's some pictures I found in a G&A annual from 1981. I knew I had the article and I found it around 1AM this morning.
Pictures aren't that great but it shows the M40A1 with the Redfield Accurange scopes. The article stated that the USMC was looking at a new scope from Unertl
actually I can't quite tell but looks to be an M40 looking at the relief behind the safety

If anyone wants the full article let me know and I'll scan it all tomorrow and get it to you.
