Detachable magazine for Remington 700?

I was watching a video on a match shooter. He was using a rifle with a box mag on his rifle. He was firing a rapid fore 10 shot string, I think it was 10 rounds.

My Remington M700 PSS .308 has an internal magazine with a 4 round capacity. I could see a problem in a match where 10 rounds were fired in one string or rapid fore.

How hard is it to convert my rifle to use a detachable magazine? Is it worth the trouble? What manufacturer for the parts? Does Midway or Brownell's sell the parts I need or is there a better source?

Badger ,Seekins ,CDI all make BM with detachable mags.Seekins uses proprietary mags the others use AICs mags.Any decent smith can install them in short order.

Do a search for Seekins, Glen makes a top notch mag system.

The Badger M5 is what the USMC is currently using on their M40A3's, they're working out really well so far. The metal in front of the magazine release pin seems to be thin, but they're holding up to the abuse the get from marines so that is saying something.

Re: Detachable magazine for Remington 700?

I've purchased the Badger bottom metal for my Rem 700P - the one with the H&S Precision stock with the aluminum bedding block. I know a smith can inlet the stock, but I'm wondering if anyone here has done it themselves? I'm looking for tips, tricks, or general things to think about that I haven't thought about yet.

Thanks.

Well, a large shop will CNC the bottom of stock to accept the the larger bottom metal, however, those shops are few and far between. If you are going to do It yourself I would recommend getting long 1/4-28 Allen bolts and bolting the new metal on so that it sits flush on the bottom of the stock and tracing around it. If you have a mill great, if not, a dremel works just be careful. The main thing is you want to make sure it is lined up for your action screws and deep enough for the pillars to contact.

Re: Detachable magazine for Remington 700?

I have access to a mill, and a dad that likes to use it. The Badger instructions are minimal, and seem to be for a stock that doessn't have the aluminum block. If I had known ahead of time, I probably would have just spent the money to get a Mac stock with the Badger inletting already done. But, since I've started...

The action screws are loose in the stock holes, so step one was to lathe aluminum 'pins' that fit exactly the diameter of the stock holes for the action screws. This allows the bottom metal to be exactly lined up for milling dimensions.

I start milling this afternoon.

Re: Detachable magazine for Remington 700?

While they are not popular here, the HS Precision detatchable bottom metal should drop right into your PSS stock without any inletting.
Bottom metal with a 10rd mag can be had for about $280 from Midway.

I inletted a Bell & Carlson stock which had the full length aluminum block and I also found that the pillar holes were well oversized.
In fact, they were right-on 5/16"

I made a couple 5/16" pins with 1/4-28 tapped ends.
This allowed the badger metal to be repeatedly located perfectly and then removed while I slowly inletted for it.
Milling out the aluminum areas was the worst of it.
The rest of it was just die grinder work.

That is what I was looking for.
I have never inletted a stock so minimal is good. If the Badger is much better than the HS I do have access to dad's mill.

Okay - that's good. At least I started in the right direction. Ended up at the range today instead of milling, but tomorrow I"m making chips.

Thanks. Already bought the Badger a coupla months ago. Besides, what good is a mill if it isn't for gunsmithing projects. I'm just standing around looking good while my old man does the dirty work. Of course I'll take all the credit later...

get the seekins or wait for the CDI metal. CDI just finished the design and should be going production soon if not already.

Seekins uses it's own mags, CDI uses AICS mags

Re: Detachable magazine for Remington 700?

Done. Looks perfect, works perfectly.

1) Lathed aluminum pins for action screw holes as a way to 'register' the new tg & magwell

2) Traced outline

3) Air-powered die-grinder + carbide 'hog' bit = short work on aluminum block around magwell. Snuck up on it

4) 23/64ths cutter in mill. Clamp stock. Hand feed.

5) Starret digital micrometer for depth. Retrace milling to correct depth. Took too big a bite, and chipped a bit of stock out due to vibration when we went from stock material to aluminum block. Didn't learn the lesson, and did it again. Both chips are small. Didn't do it a third time.

6) Chisel radiuses that didn't get milled.

7) Grind more aluminum out of magwell area. Blue Sharpie pen on metal gets rubbed/scraped off by bottom metal on high spots. Grind those if they are aluminum. Chisel them if they are stock material.

8) File smooth on the hand-cut or ground areas.

9) Gently press bottom metal into place. Voila` - perfect fit. Literally.

10) Load mag up with Snap Caps. Cycle action as fast as possible. No hang ups. Perfect mag height and function.

11) Gloat ceaselessly. Call friends and brag. Take more credit than my due. Post on Sniper's Hide and FAL Files 'Gunsmithing' posts.

Gotta shoot it this week when my new lower rings (IOR 35mm Low) come in.

Then paint it and the scope (IOR 6-24 w/ MP-8 reticle).

I just picked up a V-Bull Precision DBM kit. Stock goes back to McMillan for inletting today. It looks like a simple fit, but they're only going to charge $48 or something to do it properly. I particularly like the options for the mag release on the V-Bull. You can go lo-profile or extended release.

+1 for the VBull system. I have one on my Savage and it's top notch! I wish I had known about the VBull Rem 700 DBM before I had my GAP rifle with a Badger DBM. The VBull is a much better system in my opinion. My next 700 build will be getting the VBull treatment.

Re: Detachable magazine for Remington 700?

I think the problem with using AR mags is that they are too wide to fit into the 700 receiver without extensive machining. The JAG kit uses Mini 14 mags because they are narrower. Check out this thread: JAG Conversion Thread
Also, the AR mag release would have to be installed through the stock, since you push a button on the left to release a mag catch on the right. Doable, but more of a PITA than warranted.
I've got a JAG kit, and it works well.

Re: Detachable magazine for Remington 700?

For sure on the VS, PSS and LTR Stocks. There is a small amount of fitting/filing inside the stock between the mag well and the trigger opening. Its easy to see what needs to be done when you slide the mag frame in. I beleive it is the hinge for the mag release. I think there was even a diagram in the information pointing to the area. Some folks have used a small file but I took the Dremel with the ball type cutter bit. Only took a minute or so. Nothing to it.

Badger m5 on HS precision stock pics:

(carpet is not for sale )

If you want to DIY you will need to have:
-Good working light and flashlight.
-Dremel for overal inleting
-File was really good for those corners.
-Sandingpaper for finishing.
-Snap Caps For testing.
-And grindtone for guting those action screws. Of corse there might be better way to gut those screws but i did use grindstone so those screw worns would still work.
-Vice is also good to have.
-Helper is a must. (TY my helper)
-Common sense is a must have.

If you take too much off you can try to fix it whit bedding job
(at least i think you can but im not 100% sure does this work) but
Take your time dont rush!

It took me and my helper about 17-20h to make this. This inleting was pretty painfull but i would to it again. I didnt get much of sleep in three night Now it works flawlessly!

Hope its okay to tag onto this post with a related question. What is really entailed in switching to a detachable magazine. I picked up my LTR in .308 today and am looking to do this. Is it something an newbie can do? Does is require a smith? What am I really looking at spending?

your stick has to be inletted(milled, cut,) inorder for the mag system to fit correctly.

The efforts that I put forth didnt pan out. It is a wise mans virtue and responsibility to do the right thing. I took the advise of my seniors ( only after much futile research) and went with the best bottom metal and stock, which is a complete system now........I tried to save 500 and finally realized that there is no sub for life and quality to keep it just that. I went with AICS and about 1200 later realized happiness.
Thanks for all the input and research tips.
P.S. Am now shooting 200m .25moa 3rnd groups, and 1" 10 round grps

Re: Detachable magazine for Remington 700?

I bought a 270 wsm a couple of yrs ago from a smith that put one of the hs precision dm boxes on the stock. I just switched it out with my 308 sps tactical stock and it fits perfect except the safety stays in the position it was in when put in the stock. I will have to dremel a little of the side of the aluminum out for it to be able to go to safe and fire. I have it in the fire position right now and will keep it there. I found a couple of places that have the 10 round mags in stock. unfortunatly they are 110 bucks apiece. quite a bit more than the badger but I do not have to pay for the bottom metal unless I missed something. I am going to order the mags today. this is some of the best news I have had in awhile. I thought that I was going to have to shell out the 300 or so for the bottom metal and the mag. RG

My H-S Precision bottom metal works good in several of my rifles including both of my PSS rifles. I put it in myself and sometimes you need to adjust the bottom metal with the washers they provide so the bolt picks up the cartridges and they enter the chamber properly.

Mags are additional, $75 for 5 round and $80 for 10 round. This is the best deal on the market for such high quality stuff..I offer Inletting as well.

Re: Detachable magazine for Remington 700?

Howdy everyone, my first post here.

I've in inherited a 15+ year old Rem 700 Long Action .270 Win rifle recently from my grandfather who can no longer use it. I'm working on updating it some and cleaning it to use it for long distance target shooting. I know it's not the best caliber for target shooting but you make do with what you have nowadays.

Well I wanted to replace the BDL with a DM style. The thing is the older design has the bolt release at the base of the trigger assembly and I'm having a hard time figuring out if any of the DM kits out there work with these?

I'm also trying to figure out if the Long Action designs will fit my .270 Win bullets in them?

Here's a picture of the trigger area showing how much room is needed to fit the bolt release.
