Re: anybody have a 6.5 grendel bolt rifle?

I have heard they don't function very well.

Remington mad a 6.8 action that would make a good donor or open up a 223 bolt. You could call PT&G and have them make a bolt with the proper dimensions.

I will be building one soon (well a wildcat version), I plan on using a defiance action with PPC bolt face, and AI mags, might need to mod them somehow.

Re: anybody have a 6.5 grendel bolt rifle?

I just finished my 6.5 Grendel build this morning actually.

Its a Weatherby Vanguard action, CDI bottom metal, modified AICS .223 magazine, Bell & Carlson Tactical Medalist stock, Obermeyer 5-R 1:8 twist 6.5 barrel, chambered with a PTG .264LBC reamer. I put my old Harris bipod and IOR 10x42 daysight on it.

I'll fire my first group with it monday at work and see how it goes.

    wow, that's awesome!
Which caliber vanguard action? 223? sorry if that's a dumb question.

    Thanks,

    Brad

Re: anybody have a 6.5 grendel bolt rifle?

Yea, the gun started its life as a youth model .223 Vanguard. I opened the bolt head to PPC diameter on a mill and modified the extractor. The barrel was an absolute dream to machine, OD was perfectly concentric to the bore and the stainless was super high quality metal. Its my first Obermeyer barrel and im impressed to say the least. We will see if it shoots as easy as it was to cut monday.

BTW I would not recommend anyone going the route I went without having a machine shop at your disposal and considerable experience.

I had to remove alot of metal from the action, then fabricate and pin in a new feed ramp to get it too feed.

The AICS mag had to be modified with a spacer in the front, and changes to the feed lips.

I also had to mill several tenths from the B&C stocks aluminum skeleton in order to get the CDI bottom metal to fit flush and to feed. It feeds great now and I can load my bullets out to 2.35 before the tops touch the mag spacer.

Would be curious to see how you modded the .223 mags, and a report on how they feed for you!

Re: anybody have a 6.5 grendel bolt rifle?

The action had to be modified because of the shape of the 6.5 Grendel cartridge, it simply would not feed with the steep .223 feed ramp.

As soon as the bullet tip started up the .223 feed ramp the shoulder of the round hit the feed ramp and angle the nose of the round up way too high to go into the chamber. Then when the base of the round slipped out from under the mag feed lips, the base of the round would pop up and out of the ejection port.

To solve the problem, i put the action on a vertical mill and milled away most of the factory .223 feed ramp. Then I milled a stand alone feed ramp from a small scrap of 4130 chromoly, clamped it into the action, then drilled and pinned it in.

The AICS mag was easy to modify, i just used a sanding wheel on a long stem in a dremel tool. Took the mag apart and slipped the dremel wheel under the feed lips, turned it on and sculpted the underside of the .223 feed lips to fit the Grendel.

The next problem was that if the rounds slid forward in the mag, the nose of the bullet would end up under my "add on" feed ramp and cause malfunctions. To solve this I just shortened the follower and epoxied a 3/16 thick piece of plastic into the front of the mag as a spacer.

I do these things all the time. 700, Savage, 799, CZ I even built the Ruger that AA had on their table at NRA show last year.
Makes a dandy little rifle for sure.

Don't have one personally but I've shot one built on a CZ 527 action with a 7.62x39
bolt. It fed and shot great.
Ken226, your Vanguard looks very nice.

Re: anybody have a 6.5 grendel bolt rifle?

I shot several groups today, all @ 100 yards off the bipod and through a chronograph.

All groups were 5 rounds measured center to center with a caliper.

    1st group was 28.0 grns AA2520
Brass was Federal 7.62x39 resized in a 6.5 Grendel die, but not yet fireformed.
    Velocity @ 10ft was 2490-2520 fps, group measured .48

    2nd group was 29.0 grns AA2520
Brass was Federal 7.62x39 which had been fireformed with pistol powder and cornmeal.
Velocity was 2558-2580 fps, group measured .89

3rd group was the same as the last, 29grns AA2520 in fireformed brass. Velocity was the same, varied from a low of 2560 to the highest at 2582. Accuracy this group was .67

For some guys these aren't great groups, but for me they are fantastic. I'm very happy with the accuracy and velocity both. I really didn't expect the velocity to be that high with these first light loads. Tomorrow i'll try three loads with 29.2, 29.4 and 29.6 grains.

The mag fed flawlessly. Granted I only shot 15 rounds but there were no malfunctions of any kind.

Re: anybody have a 6.5 grendel bolt rifle?

I have a buddy that had CZ's custom shop barrel a CZ527 7.62x39 action with a 22" Douglas, select match stainless barrel chambered in Grendel in their Kevlar Varmint model.

He says he's running 139gr Scenars at 2650-2700fps with N140, getting 1/4" groups at 100yds.

The CZ and Zastava micro actions are great starting points for a Grendel bolt gun, and a small rifle primer Lapua case + bolt action can take way more pressure than 50k psi like in the AR15.
