    300 PRC update

Maybe I'm just cheep, but I'd think either one of those should come with free Dick's Sporting Goods velcro socks and gloves combo.

    300 PRC update

I bet you are right. We're still shooting factory Hornady 225 ELDMs and they are performing well considering the SD is fairly high (~20). Our rifle has a 30" Bartlein 1:9 that's not fully broke in yet (120 rounds) and is running in the 2975-3000 fps range. Today we shot it at 2400 yards and...

    Hearing Protection

This is especially important for shooters. Below 50 Hz, you "hear" mostly from the resonance of the femur pushing the wave through your body and eventually coupling with the auditory system. Gunfire has a large component - the muzzle blast - that has a huge amplitude down around DC, so the...

Right on. We've taken that path with our 300PRC. Let it happen, cap'n!

Cold air mirage - is it real?

Mirage has some common principles with Snell's Law, but it's not identical. Snell's Law pertains to the change in the speed of light (and the related bending) when a photon passes from one substance to another. You can think of hot and cold air in that light, in that the temperature-derived...

Cold air mirage - is it real?

That's right. The physics part of it relates to the variation of the index of refraction with air temperature. Cold air is denser and has a higher refractive index than hot air . Light traveling close to the hot ground is bent upwards more than in the colder air above. That creates the...

    "Long Distance Record Broken"

As long as a shooter tells the truth, I don't care how many shots he lobs. At each new distance, somebody has to get it all started. And I don't even care if the target size is moment of barn. Eventually, we'll see someone hit a smaller target in less shots, etc. Who knows, maybe someone...

    300 PRC update

That may be good ammo but it uses Hornady brass and is $127 a box. The Berger 338LMs are $83 a box, use Lapua brass and are very consistent for factory ammo. The Hornady ELDM isn't bad - ~$40 a box, SDs run between 15 and 20. Handloading is the best option but I am not ready yet, too much...

    300 PRC update

I'd like to see Berger load 300 PRC but I won't hold my breath. The Berger 338 LM with the 300 grain OTM is a very good value. I'm seeing SDs less than 10. The Hornady ELDMs in 300 PRC are running SDs around 18 or 19.

400 yards max, what would you do?

Since the thread title asks what I'd do... After I finished splooging all over my undies, I'd go take a shower. Then I'd get to work building the first backstop. I helped build a range in a densely wooded area when I was a kid. We built a big berm, cleared a 25 yard alley and shot handgun...

    And Then There Were None

Beer is the 4th food group. Err, I mean: Well, we're a farming family with orchards so fruit and veggies are a given. I did not mean that we just pounded protein. OTOH, I'm not into tofu, I want to sink my teeth into charred flesh, hot off the grill. My neighbor says the potato goes in the...

    And Then There Were None

Wow. Thanks for the info. Maybe my dad was just comparing to men in his family. They were all fricken Amazons. His last surviving brother passed about a year ago and he was the uncle I was closest to. He served in the Navy and was off the coast of Japan when the nuke was dropped on...
