Which MOA base for the 338?

Assume a 338 Norma...you want to get as far as the cartridge will take you (say 2000 yards) ....assume you have a Nightforce scope.

Would you get a 20 MOA base, 30 or 45 --- those are your only choices.

Can you still zero at 100 Yards (not sure that is really a requirement, but a thought).

    Thanks!

    my .02

    I use a 20MOA base on my 338, I zero at 500.
I don't shoot my 338 at close range.

I hold over and then add clicks when req'd.

I think it depends on how much MOA your scope has to offer. What I did was contact the scope manufacture and tell them what I wanted to accomplish in terms of how far you want to be able to shoot. Then they can get you setup in the right way. Make sure you tell them what round you are going to be using as well.

You want to bottom the scopes elevation and then sight the scope in, the MOA rail will allow you to do this. This way you can take advantage of all the scopes elevation.

My 375 Cheytac has a 40 minute base and I can still sight in at 100 yards and lots of adjustment left after 2000 yards.I've got the 5.5-22x56 NXS.I think the 45 min might be the way to go for you.

Keep in mind that the more MOA you have in the base, the higher up your head is going to be. Not saying the 45 isn't right for you - just something to consider. I have 25 on my 338LM.

I have a 45 MOA base (AI) and a 5.5-22x56 mm Nightforce on my AIAWSM. I should have enough MOA to get out to about 2000 yards, even with the 300 SMK. I would go for the 45. Always better to have and don't need it than need it and don't have it. JMHO.

I just cut down a 45moa base to 30moa for a frinds .408. He was 13" high at 100 with the scope bottomed out

30moa with a 5-22nsx will go further than you will ever use. It will give you almost all of the scopes adjustment. and you will still be able to zero at 100 if you wanted to.

Done that before. Works great. 30-40 moa is your best choice.

I've got a 40moa base on my Edge which still allows a 100yd zero and just about gives me all the adjustment the 5.5-22NXS has to offer.
